Omori's triples trump Zhou's wizardry in short

Zhou, too, skated a career-best short, spinning like a whirling dervish and hitting two big jump elements -- his triple Lutz-triple toe combination and triple flip -- in the second half of his Sorcerer's Apprenticeprogram."It's a personal best score for me, so I'm pretty happy," the diminutive 12-year-old said. "It adds to my confidence for the long."Cindy Stuart's playful choreography helps bring out the mischievous side of Zhou, who loves to play to a crowd."I think about my character, the sorcerer's apprentice, and work my magic out there," Zhou said. "I think that consistency plays a big part; it gives me confidence I can do the big tricks and still focus on the character."The difference between Omori and Zhou, in addition to Omori's greater maturity, is a triple Axel. Zhou did just a double, with a base value of 3.30 points, versus Omori's triple, valued at 8.50 points. According to Gambill, her younger prodigy is getting closer to the jump all the time."He has made quite a bit of progress on the triple Axel; it's just not ready for this season," she said. "We're hoping by next year we will be able to put it in the short and the long. That is our goal."There's no rush; he is only 12, but he gets bored if he doesn't start doing something different. He will ask, 'Can I do this jump with my hand over my head?' and I'll say, 'Yes, but other things, you're not allowed to try yet.' We want to make sure he is strong enough and mature enough to handle the stress."

A boy in his daddy’s suit took the junior men’s title tonight at the 2013 Prudential U.S. National Figure Skating Championships, and along the way, earned the second highest score in competition history for a junior man.Twelve-year-old Vincent Zhou from Palo Alto, Calif., won his third national title in as many years, completing the intermediate-novice-junior champion trifecta.“That was incredible—it was the skate of my life,” Zhou said immediately after his skate. “It just felt incredible. I can barely describe it. This program is a very mature program, and it took a lot of work. I was able to put my best out there and do it all.”Skating to music from the film Casa Blanca, choreographer Justin Dillon wanted to take advantage of the young skater’s natural charisma, but also wanted to push him further than Zhou had ever gone before.“The whole reason I picked this music for him was because he is such a young kid out there, and I wanted him to be a little gentleman,” Dillon explained. “It’s almost like it’s a boy who is playing dress up in his dad’s suit. It’s so whimsical, but it totally fits him and his personality.”Zhou was technically sound—landing six clean triple jumps, earned level four on two of his spins, and level three for his step sequence and closing combination spin.“I love the last triple Lutz-triple toe, and it’s a big hurdle for me,” he said. “I was glad to get it done. I stuck with the plan, and I was able to get it done. It was pretty difficult.”The gold medalist scored a personal best 205.26 points.“This is my personal best by six points,” said the champion. “I got 199 at Regionals. I was like, ‘what’s my problem—I can’t get over 200′. So this is a huge accomplishment for me, and I’m very proud.”

Finishing third was last year’s champion, 13-year-old Nathan Chen from Salt Lake City. After starting the season off strong in his debut on the Junior Grand Prix circuit, Chen has struggled with injury and this week, a stomach bug.“Everybody did the best they could, and I want to congratulate all of the medalists,” Chen said.Chen started out slow in his program to The Three Musketeers—completing five double jumps before even attempting a triple. The bronze medalist did land four triples, but never looked like the skater who won the title last year in San Jose.“It’s a great experience. There are always wins and losses in any sports career, and I think that it’s great to push through it to know what it feels like on either side,” Chen said philosophically. “It’s a good thing for me to be in this position.”Chen scored 181.31 points in the competition.
Skate it again, Zhou! 12-year-old dominates juniors

01/22/2013) - Vincent Zhou performed his free skate to music fromCasablanca, and no matter how much time goes by, the 12-year-old from Palo Alto, Calif., will never forget it."That was the skate of my life," Zhou said. "I was so happy out there. I just felt incredible. I can barely describe it."Bogart sported a white dinner jacket, but Zhou chose to wear a black tuxedo as he reeled off seven triple jumps in his sparkling routine, including a triple flip-double toe-double loop combination and triple Lutz-triple toe (the toe was under-rotated).As choreographed by Justin Dillon, the program is crammed with intricate steps and transitions, as well as some nifty spins. Through it all, the diminutive dynamo barely put a foot wrong, amassing 138.95 points and finishing with an eye-popping total of 205.26."This is my personal best by six points," said Zhou, who gives his height as 4 feet, 10 inches. "I got 199 at regionals, and I was like, 'What's wrong with me? I can't get over 200.' So this is a huge accomplishment for me, and I'm very proud. It will give me a lot of confidence in myself and it's amazing."Relishing his moments in the spotlight, Zhou waved to the crowd and donned a black top hat in the kiss and cry."He is a little pistol. He always keeps me very entertained and on my toes," his coach, Tammy Gambill, said. "He skates like this on a daily basis, and for him to come out here and do it under pressure, I'm very proud."Gambill credits a healthy work ethic for her pupil's success."He's always up for the challenge. He is trying to be better than the senior men," she said. "He is always the first one there in the morning, out in the dark warming up in the parking lot before the rink is even open."Dillon chose Casablanca as an age-appropriate vehicle to show off Zhou's still-budding maturity."Vincent won intermediate, he won novice, and it's time to grow up a little bit, but you don't want to leave the nursery when you're only 12 years old," he said. "I wanted to pick something where he could be a little gentleman, a little boy in his dad's suit. He's starting to move up the ranks to be a top competitor, but he's still a little boy."
