Sasha returns to California

World and U.S. silver medalist Sasha Cohen announced today she has moved back to California and will train with former coach John Nicks through the 2005 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championships. As a result of the move she will no longer be coached by Robin Wagner.

“After the last several years training on the East Coast I have come to the realization that California is my home, and it is time for me to return,” Cohen said. “Working with Robin for the past year has been a wonderful experience for me; she is a great coach and friend. She is supportive of my decision to move home to California to be back with my friends and family, and I wish her nothing but the best in the future.”

Cohen grew up in Laguna Niguel, Calif., and lived there with her family until she was 17. She moved to the East Coast during the summer of 2002 and began training with Robin Wagner in December 2003.

“I hope Sasha is rejuvenated by going home with her family to the warm California climate and devotes herself to meeting the challenges ahead,” Wagner said. “She is a special young woman, and I wish her the very best. I know she can do it.”

With Cohen’s homecoming to California also comes her return to Nicks, who is also famed for coaching three-time U.S. pairs champions Jenni Meno and Todd Sand as well as five-time U.S. pairs champions Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner.

“It is an exciting time for me to be working with Sasha again,” Nicks said. “I think it is great that she has returned to her roots, home and friends. I look forward to helping Sasha prepare for U.S. nationals, and I anticipate much success.”

“I am enjoying working with Mr. Nicks again to prepare for U.S. nationals,” Cohen said. “I was immediately comfortable working with him, almost like I never left. I think my decision to move back to California will improve the quality of my life, which will in turn benefit my skating.”

Cohen will compete at the 2005 U.S. Championships in Portland, Ore., Jan. 9-16.
