Mira Leung Update

Okay, I am going to cover more overseas skaters with Chinese bonds. Today's topic is Mira Leung. She is a young Chinese Canadian from Vancouver. She is 2006 silver medalist for Canadian Nationals, 12th place at Olympics and 13th place at Worlds. After worlds, she split up with coach McLeod. There's a lot of emotional debate on this skater. Some love her fiery and determination. Some think her line and basic skating skills are terrible. I personally like her. Her major strength is the ability to consistently land jumps at competitions.

Here's some update on her recent move.

Mira Leung is adding two triple-triple combos in the upcoming season.

Leung met her new mentor Christine McBeth at a skating seminar in Richmond in May. However, the two have only recently begun formal sessions at Minoru Arena, where McBeth teaches with the Connaught Figure Skating Club."

Leung says she's excited but a little nervous about the coming season, which she describes as a bit like "balancing on the edge of a cliff." That's because the talented young skater and her new coach have decided to try two triple-triple jump combinations this year. Leung has put the triple Lutz-triple loop into her short program and will add that plus the triple flip-triple loop to her free skate.

"Doing the triple-triple is the key to breaking into the top group of women skaters," maintains Leung, who finished 12th at the Turin Olympics, then 13th at the worlds in Calgary. "It's exciting because the reward is huge. But it's also a risk."

Mira Leung just participated in the monitoring camp.

The Vancouver figure skater's season officially began Friday with the first public unveiling of her short program for the coming season as part of Skate Canada's fall monitoring camp at the Pacific Coliseum.

"I felt my skate today was okay, but I'm not super happy with it," Leung said after Friday's skate. She landed a solid triple flip and double Axel, but committed a slight turnout of her landing on the triple loop segment of her combination.

Some people commented that Mira has difficulty in fully rotating her second jump of triple-triple combinations. I'm not sure about that.
