Can you imagine when this race is won
Turn our golden faces into the sun

Youth is like diamonds in the sun
And dimonds are forever

So many adventures couldnt happen today
So many songs we forgot to play

So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true

Yes!

Belbin, Agosto aiming forwardJohn Niyo / The Detroit News

CANTON TOWNSHIP -- Last month's Grand Prix final in Torino, Italy, marked a silver anniversary of sorts for Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto. And while returning to the scene of their 2006 Olympic glory proved to be a nostalgic trip for America's highest-profile figure skaters -- their runner-up finish in '06 gave the U.S. its first Olympic ice dance medal in 30 years -- it also served as a reminder. It's time to look forward.
"It's funny because we were walking around the city a little bit, and we all kind of wanted to go back to the (athletes') village," said Belbin, who trains with Agosto at the Arctic Edge in Canton. "But now the village is actually low-income housing and it's supposedly the most dangerous part of town.
"When we tried to walk over the bridge to go, people there were saying 'Don't go!'
Another 2006 Olympian, reigning U.S. singles champ Kimmie Meissner, did venture across with her father.
"But she said they stayed about two seconds and turned right around," Belbin laughed. "So things do change, I guess."

And time does fly. Belbin and Agosto are beginning their 10th year together as a dance team at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minn. Overwhelming favorites to win their record-tying fifth consecutive U.S. title, they're also keenly aware of the calendar: Next month marks the halfway point between Torino and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
"When we did get the chance to go to the Olympics (in 2006), we were talking a lot about how lucky we were in not knowing we were going until the last minute," said Belbin, a Canadian-born skater who got her U.S. citizenship just in time for Torino. "And now we're beginning to really understand -- you start stressing years before, and it's starting now. It's a very long game of chess that you begin about this time."

After today's compulsories at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Thursday's original dance is the next move for Belbin and Agosto, whose foot-stomping, crowd-pleasing Appalachian hoedown plays to their entertaining strengths. But Saturday's free dance -- to a Chopin concerto medley arranged by Emmy-winning composer Joseph LoDuca of Bloomfield Hills -- offers a departure for the skaters, who haven't left an international competition without a medal since 2004.

"It's the most classical piece we've done for a free dance," Belbin said. "It's totally new for us and it required a lot more basic skating skill training in the summer to improve our lines and our posture and all the things you'd expect to go with a more balletic style. It pushed us in the right direction to look more mature."
Last summer's back-to-basics approach with their coach, Igor Shpilband, also meant more off-ice training designed to improve their strength and speed. And the early returns look good -- a pair of gold medals in Skate America and the Cup of China followed by a silver at the Grand Prix final in Torino. Their closest competitors in St. Paul figure to be their Canton training partners -- second-year seniors Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who were last year's U.S. bronze medalists. But Belbin and Agosto will get another shot at Russians Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin at the world championships in March.
"We were always criticized for having weaker lifts, weaker extensions -- all these things the top teams have -- and this year we're getting (the marks)," Belbin said. "For the first time in maybe three or four years, we've really taken a step and I feel like that's showing."

Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto's hard work paid off. They lead after the compulsory dance. (Michelle Harvath)

(01/23/2008) - The "back-to-basics" training approach Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto have talked about all season continued to pay dividends today, as the couple jumped out to a 1.27-point lead with a speedy, fast-stepping Yankee Polka at the 2008 U.S. Figure Skating Championships."We felt we did it very well," the 23-year-old Belbin said. "It's a good start." "We think we've made a step forward this year with the compulsory dances," added her 26-year-old partner. "We have put the time in. There is really no other way to improve them but to work on basic skating skills." For the four-time defending champions and the rest of the 13-team field, the Yankee Polka can be summed up neatly: it's round and round and smile, smile, smile. The dance, a sprightly American export, is seeing a lot of action these days; it was also the compulsory at the Canadian championships last week and at the European championships earlier this week. This morning, Xcel Energy Center workers in the facility's labyrinth-like ground floor have had to contend with high-energy couples hopping around to a silent 120 beats per minute, the speed of the dance. Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who train alongside Belbin and Agosto in Canton, Mich., were the most dangerous this morning; they were so absorbed in their kicks and steps that they almost whirled into a group of security guards on a break. The couple, who won the bronze medal at the 2007 State Farm U.S. Championships, placed second with 40.59 points. "That dance just takes so much energy," the 20-year-old White said. "As always, we've been training hard, and we knew we were going to nationals to try and do well." The young team, who have skated together an astounding 11 years, fared better than Belbin and Agosto in the total element score, earning 21.12 points to 20.94. When the program components were added in, the defending champions came out ahead with 41.86 points total. "It's nice to know the judges are seeing what we've done and are giving us the scores," White said.Igor Shpilband, who trains the top two teams, liked what he saw today. "It was generally good," he said. "Maybe one of Tanith and Ben's sequences didn't have as much energies as the others, but there was no mistake. And it's a great dance for Meryl and Charlie; they skate it so close together and just keep attacking." The übercoach, who has nearly single-handedly put American ice dancing on the map over the last decade, feels that his top couple may fare better in the compulsory at the upcoming 2008 World Championships."The Yankee Polka is not Tanith and Ben's best dance," he said. "It's always hard for couples with long legs, because the steps are so quick. "At worlds, they will compete either the Austrian Waltz or the Tango. Both of those are good dances for Tanith and Ben."

Evan Lysacek -

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i305/fs2046/EvanJPSkating08011.jpg

Evan:Lori

那个Salchow的fall(膝盖重重着地)有没有摔伤?
Evan:

Evan:

Evan:

Evan:

Evan,

Champs maintain lead despite slipAgosto has trouble with twizzles

By Lynn Rutherford, special to icenetwork.com

(01/24/2008) - Nobody is perfect.

Two acknowledged masters of the twizzles, Ben Agosto and Charlie White, both had small but uncharacteristic missteps on the one-foot turn in their folk/country original dances this evening in Saint Paul.

"I put my foot down," said the 25-year-old Agosto.

"It was just a stupid mistake; I lost my focus for a second. I better not do it again, because there is no need to lose any points when you don't have to. Aside from that, I thought it was a great performance."

"It's the strongest we've done all season," added partner Tanith Belbin. "We controlled our elements, but skated with a lot of energy. We've made some obvious improvements since the Grand Prix Final; our elements were good, aside from our trip."

The Olympic silver medalists opened their Appalachian Hoedown with the toe-tapping "Cotton-Eyed Joe," then transitioned gracefully into a country waltz. Except for Agosto's slip, they didn't put a foot wrong.

They even had the confidence to playfully pass Agosto's battered black hat back and forth during their closing rotational lift. That's a risky move, since a dropped prop means an automatic one-point deduction.

"We've only dropped the hats once, in practice," Belbin said. "That time, my top was coming down. It was either drop the hat or grab the top. I decided to go for the top."

The champs earned 64.29 points, good enough for first place in the segment. Agosto's error dropped their twizzle sequence to Level 2, with a -.07 grade of execution (GOE). They have 106.15 points overall and take a 2.87-point lead into the free dance.

White and partner Meryl Davis, the two 20-year-olds who train alongside Belbin and Agosto in Canton, Mich., are hot on their elders' heels.

The young couple's only mistake came when White, usually a superb twizzler, faltered slightly on the first of his turns.

"I had one more than Meryl," White explained. "I missed grabbing my blade on the first turn, and we need to do four twizzles to get Level 4, so I did one extra."

That minor mishap did not seem to affect their score, and the rest of their Russian folk dance to the familiar "Kalinka" was near flawless. They gained five Level 4 elements and a bevy of +2 GOE's from the judges.

"We had lots of energy; we tried to get the crowd into it," White said. "I'm pleased with our scores. We are where we want to be."

"There were a few bobbles, but the overall quality of the program was good," Davis added.

There's been a change in costuming since the program's competitive debut at Skate America earlier this season: White's snappy black cap is gone.

"Yeah, the cap got nicked," the boyish White said. "It made me look too young. I can't grow a beard yet, so we have to find other ways to help me look mature."

The couple earned 62.69 points for the dance, and their total element score, 33.37, was .81 higher than Belbin and Agosto's. Overall, they are 2.87 points off the lead.

"The greatest motivation we have is training where we do, with the teams we do," Belbin said. "Meryl and Charlie's level of skating is so high, you can't help but do your best. There are no guarantees; we have to train and work hard every day, because they are so close behind."

Third in the compulsory dance, Kimberly Navarro and Brent Bommentre maintained their position with a crowd-pleasing African Harvest dance, choreographed by 1980 Olympic champion Natalia Linichuk.

The popular couple exploded with energy, opening with a stunning straight-line lift with
