“I wanted to tell American children the story of how such an ordinary girl as Yu-na Kim became the world’s top sports star.”
Christine Dzidrums, an American author of children’s books, said in an e-mail interview with The Dong-A Ilbo that her biography “Yuna Kim: Ice Queen” will be published in the U.S. in a few weeks.
She said Kim’s story of overcoming difficulty to make her dreams come true will provide deep inspiration to American children.
On April 2, Dzidrums first announced on her blog that Kim’s biography would be published. As a fan of figure skating, the author said she has watched Kim since the figure skater was a little child.
Dzidrums said she became interested in Kim’s background after she won the gold medal in last year`s Vancouver Winter Olympics.
While many figure skaters give up their dreams because of injuries and difficulties, Kim overcame all of hers and achieved everything, Dzidrums said, adding Kim’s story will inspire younger generations as an example of the importance of effort and perseverance.
The author said she always respects athletes who were not afraid of challenge and continued to grow both artistically and technically, calling Kim a “perfect” example.
Dzidrums said she wants to publish a revised biography of Kim in several years if the figure skater continues to rewrite history in the sport.

Well it’s been a strange, kinda stressful, but good last few days. The press found out about Yuna Kim: Ice Queen, and I’ve received a string of emails and been featured in various newspapers and on Korea TV. For the first time I found myself misquoted too. Also, one article had quotes attributed to me that I never said. In fact, I never spoke to the writer. They were harmless enough quotes, so I was more amused than anything but still…it was strange to see “me” saying things I hadn’t said.
I’ve also received some cool emails from different people. The most exciting communication came from Yuna’s inner circle…who read the manuscript this weekend and then offered some suggestions which I eagerly incorporated into the book. How lucky am I? When I began this project I never dreamed of receiving such feedback. And just to ensure that my comments don’t get misconstrued in the press… my children’s book has always been an unofficial biography and remains an unofficial biography. They were just interested in reading the book and then afterwards offered some suggestions/corrections. I was so touched by their generosity, kindess and helpfulness. And before anyone asks, I have no idea if Yuna was one of the people who read the book. I’m thinking she has more important matters to attend to right now…like…I don’t know….training for the world championships…than to read my little book. I just know someone close to her read it, and for that, I’m grateful and honored. Anyway, here are a few links to some of the previously mentioned articles.

Oh and because the book cover has popped up in many stories recently, I want to acknowledge that the insanely talented photographer Jay Adeff took the gorgeous cover shot of Yuna. He is so incredibly kind and talented. I’m so lucky that he allowed us to use the photo for the cover.

Ms. Dzidrums: I've always been a fan of skaters with terrific technique. Yuna's technique is breathtaking. Her spins, jumps, footwork, ice coverage are gorgeous. In addition, she's one of the few champions in the sport to continue to push herself, not just artistically but technically. How many skaters have won a world title in such a dominating fashion and returned the next season as the heavy favorite and debuted even more technically demanding programs? You have to admire someone who does that for the sport, who is the standard in ladies figure skating and continues to try to elevate the sport.
