Shpilband booted from Arctic Figure Skating Club
(06/03/2012) - Igor Shpilband, whose teams have won each of the last three world ice dancing titles as well as the 2010 Olympic gold medal, was told he could no longer coach at the Arctic Figure Skating Club in Canton, Mich., on Sunday, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Shpilband learned of his dismissal at around 5:30 p.m. in a meeting with Craig O'Neill, general manager of the Arctic Edge, and rink owner John Stansik.
"I'm totally shocked," Shpilband told the paper.
Since defecting to the United States from the Soviet Union in 1990, Shpilband has risen to become the preeminent ice dancing coach in the world. With coaching partner Marina Zoueva, his three top teams -- Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani -- have combined to bring home seven of the last nine medals at the world championships. Virtue and Moir are also the 2010 Olympic champions. Davis and White, Shibutanis sticking with Zoueva

(06/05/2012) - The top two U.S. ice dancing teams, 2010 Olympic silver medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White and 2011 world bronze medalists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani, will continue to train at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton, Mich., with Marina Zoueva, U.S. Figure Skating announced Monday.
The announcement comes a day after Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton, Mich., made the decision to cease its relationship with coach Igor Shpilband.
"Igor and I built this program together, and it was great. Unfortunately, we are going in different directions," Zoueva said. "The skaters are very talented and focused. They have very strong work ethics, and together we will move forward."
Zoueva and Shpilband, who began coaching together in 2002, are credited with building the world's top ice dancing program at the Canton rink. Their pupils, including Davis and White, the Shibutanis and Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, have won seven of the last nine world ice dancing medals. Virtue and Moir, and Davis and White finished one-two, respectively, at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
Davis and White, the reigning four-time U.S. champions and 2011 world champions, had trained under Zoueva and Shpilband since 2006.
"After a long and rewarding partnership with Igor Shpilband, we hold the firm conviction that Igor's expertise and investment in our career have been integral to our success," Davis said. "We will have nothing but fond memories and sincere appreciation for our time with Igor."
The Shibutanis, the reigning two-time U.S. silver medalists, had trained under the former coaching pair since 2007.
"Our experience with Igor has been very rewarding," Alex Shibutani said. "He is a great coach, and we appreciate everything he has done for us."
Virtue and Moir have not publicly stated where or with whom they will train going forward. When contacted by the Detroit Free Press on Monday, Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada's director of high performance, wrote, "We are aware of the coaching situation in Canton, but do not have much information, other than what has been reported as we have not discussed it with Tessa and Scott." Marina Zoueva will remain as Meryl Davis and Charlie White's primary coach.

Skate Canada: Virtue, Moir staying with Zoueva
Reiging Olympic champions Virtue, Moir to remain in Canton
By icenetwork.com
(06/06/2012) - Reigning world and Olympic champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will continue to be coached by Marina Zoueva at Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton, Mich., Skate Canada confirmed Wednesday on Twitter.
A Twitter user asked the federation Tuesday on the social networking site, "Any news about V-M coaching? They stay with Marina Zoueva?"
Skate Canada replied, "yes, they are still with Marina."
While Zoueva and Arctic Edge General Manager Craig O'Neill confirmed to the Detroit Free Press on Sunday that the rink's top three teams -- including Virtue and Moir, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani -- would be remaining in Canton, neither the Canadians nor their federation made an official statement regarding their intentions until today.
This situation came about after the rink management's decision on Sunday to disallow Igor Shpilband, Zoueva's longtime coaching partner, from working at its facility.

Povilas Vanagas拒绝了
"Zoueva didn't approach us directly, she asked Lithuanian judge if we would like to jointhe team, so to speak. At the moment we don't think about coaching career at all, we continue skating. So we said right away, thank you, but no."
He said that he and his wife learned about the news just the day, or rather, a night before: "We don't know any details, of course, many people are upset about that, a conflict is a conflict."

Shpilband moving to Novi, bringing Chock and Bates
http://web.icenetwork.com/images/2011/09/30/LClJPbxp.jpg
(06/12/2012) - Igor Shpilband has decided to settle at Novi Ice Arena in Novi, Mich., and he's bringing Madison Chock and Evan Bates with him.
The decision comes after Shpilband and his longtime coaching partner, Marina Zoueva, ended their professional relationship last week. Shpilband's new base in Novi is less than 20 miles away from his old grounds at Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Canton, Mich., where Zoueva remains.
Chock and Bates, who trained under Shpilband and Zoueva, are the first duo to publicly make the move with Shpilband. Reigning world champions and 2010 Olympic gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, 2011 world champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White, and 2011 world bronze medalists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani all announced they are staying with Zoueva at Arctic Edge.
"Working with Igor has always been invigorating, and I look forward to continuing our skating career under his guidance," Bates said. "He is a brilliant coach, and I am confident that he will do everything to help us achieve our goals on the ice.
"I am sincerely grateful to have worked with Marina. She is talented, and I have wonderful memories of my time with her. My experience in Canton has been nothing but positive, thanks to the team of coaches and my training mates."
After teaming up in July 2011, Chock and Bates enjoyed four top-five finishes during their first season. They won the bronze medal at 2011 Finlandia Trophy before placing fourth and fifth, respectively, at Skate Canada and Trophée Eric Bompard. They closed the season with a fifth-place showing at the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January.
Chock and Bates are scheduled to take the ice at the 2012 Cup of China, Nov. 2-4 in Shanghai. 。。。
