They have high expectations from their students and parted ways with those that haven't been treating the sport seriously enough. They put emphasis on competetive skating (there simply isn't enough ice time to facilitate recreational skating also).
They work with 18 competetive skaters at the moment plus 4 pair teams and consider them all to be promising.
They are going to welcome Richard Gauthier to Torun in October. He coming for the Junior Grand Prix and is going to share his expertise and work together with them and their teams.
Kemp/King didn't manage to cope with the pressure at Euros. After their last year's 6th place, the expectations were very high. However, they worked very hard with them for the following two months and they managed to skate brilliantly at Worlds and secured an Olympic qualification.
They think Sergejeva/Glebov have huge potential. They've been observing them at the ISU pair seminars and noticed huge progress in recent seasons. Yet, their performances didn't reflect that. After talking to them, they've established that they haven't been training properly. They are moving to Torun permanently, in September and they're going to work on changing that.
They were asked if they ever have different opinions during practices and as a result argue. Apparently it hardly ever happens.
They are happy with their working conditions. The only problem is lack of ice time. Practices would start at 6am and the last ones could finish as late as 1am. With the second full size ice pad added to their ice rink, those conditions have improved a lot but are still not perfect (there's also a third small-size rink they are using as much as they can). They would also like to have access to a fitness/dancing studio. There's one at the small rink but none at the main one.
Sylwia Nowak has spent the last week of April working with them and they've been very happy with the results. She is going to come to Torun again, in August, to help Mariusz prepare their skaters for the upcoming season, while Dorota is taking time off. |
