RUDY GALINDO, LORI NICHOL NAMED TO U.S. FIGURE SKATING HALL OF FAME
(12/17/12) - Three-time U.S. champion Rudy Galindo and choreographer Lori Nichol have been elected to the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame Class of 2013. The induction will be held in conjunction with the 2013 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships Jan. 20-27 in Omaha, Neb.
"Rudy Galindo and Lori Nichol's contributions to the sport of figure skating are deserving of inclusion to the U.S. Hall of Fame," said Larry Mondschein, chair of the hall's nominating committee. "In addition, both continue to contribute to our sport. As a coach, Rudy is training a new generation of athletes, while Lori remains one of the most recognizable and respected choreographers in the world."
Galindo won two U.S. pairs titles (1989, '90) with Kristi Yamaguchi, who the following season chose to concentrate solely on a singles career; she became the 1992 Olympic champion. Galindo, who was the 1987 World Junior champion, also returned to a singles career and earned the 1996 U.S. title. In one of the most-memorable performances at a U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Galindo stunned the field with an electrifying free skate to win the gold medal in his hometown of San Jose, Calif. He earned the bronze at the 1996 World Championships and then retired from competitive skating.
Galindo, 43, coaches in San Jose. Among his students is Emma Hedican, the daughter of Yamaguchi and husband Brett Hedican. Galindo was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
Nichol is one of the most sought-after choreographers in the world. In 1995, the Canadian created Michelle Kwan's iconic "Salome" program, which debuted a new look and sophistication for the 15-year-old. Nichol worked with Kwan, the most-decorated figure skater in U.S. history, until early 2001.
Nichol, 49, is renowned for crafting artistic and technically difficult programs. She choreographed 2010 Olympic champion Evan Lysacek's programs, being mindful to maximize the American's scoring potential. Nichol's choreography credits include eight Olympic medals and at least 30 World medals. She also will be inducted into the Skate Canada Hall of Fame Class of 2013. |
