Pairs, Short Program
Dan Zhang/Hao Zhang of China won the Pairs Short Program with Russia’s Yuko Kawaguchi/Alexander Smirnov and Ukrainians Tatiana Volosozhar/Stanislav Morozov following in second and third.
Zhang/Zhang opened their romantic program to “Riding on the Wings of Songs” by Felix Mendelssohn with a huge triple twist followed by a beautiful throw triple loop, but then she stepped out of the side by side triple Salchow and fell seconds later on nothing. The reigning World silver medalists recovered to complete a level-four side by side combination spin, level-three spiral sequence and hand-to-hip lift that was graded a level four. The Chinese couple picked up 67.06 points (38.30 element score/29.76 program component score). “We made some errors today, I just fell on nothing”, Dan Zhang commented. “We are mostly not satisfied with our performance, we are unhappy about our mistakes”, she continued. “On the positive side, the rest of the performance was good”, her partner added.
Kawaguchi/Smirnov had to overcome a shaky start into their balletic routine to “The Swan” by Camille Saint-Saens when she fell on the side by side triple toeloop, but they executed the triple twist and a difficult lift. However, Kawaguchi also stumbled on the throw triple loop. The Russian Champions earned 58.76 points (32.00/27.76). “Maybe we were trying too hard. Hopefully we’ll do better tomorrow”, Smirnov told the post-event press conference.
Volosozhar/Morozov’s program to “Mr. Holland’s Opus” featured a big triple twist, a hand-to-hip lift with a one armed entry and level-three spins, but they struggled with the solo jump and the throw jump. He missed the side by side triple toe while she fell on the throw triple loop. The Cup of China silver medalists scored 58.34 points (33.54/26.80). “We are not satisfied at all with this performance. We made two major errors, with falls. The ice was ok, these were just our technical mistakes”, Morozov explained.
Ksenia Ozerova/Alexander Enbert (RUS) came in fourth with a solid performance that included a triple toeloop and throw triple loop (52.26 points). World junior silver medalists Lubov Iliushechkina/Nodari Maisuradze (RUS) also completed a side by side triple toeloop and a nice double twist, but she two-footed the throw triple loop. He fell on cross-overs and she stumbled over him (49.96 points). |
