Rochette to skip figure skating nationals

Olympic bronze medallist Joannie Rochette announced Tuesday that she will skip the Canadian figure skating championships in January.

Rochette captivated the world with her performance at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, opting to compete despite the death of her mother during the Games and skating to a bronze.

The 24-year-old from Ile Dupas, Que., is still pondering her future in the sport. She has skated in galas and given speeches during the fall and will continue to do ice shows.

"I'm so glad that after the Olympics, I've had the opportunity to appear in so many skating shows," she said in a Skate Canada release. "I really enjoy skating for the fans in so many different cities and countries. I'm looking forward to performing in upcoming shows in Japan, Germany, Italy, the USA and Canada."

Rochette's last competitive event was the Japan Open in October, which she won. She is a six-time national champion and won silver at the worlds in 2009.

"I love figure skating and it's a part of who I am, and I love the adrenaline that competition brings to my life," she said.

"I am hoping to keep up that competitive spirit even though I am doing more shows now, and I do want to stay competitive within the skating circuit. I will take my time to make a decision regarding competing in the future and I intend to keep my amateur status."
