Men’s Short Program Opens Four Continents on Thursday
A total of twenty-eight men performed their short programs to open up competition at the 2012 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and reigning World champion Patrick Chan is in first place after the short program on Thursday night at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Skating to “Take Five”, Chan, who trains in Colorado Springs, opened with a bobble on his quad toe but rebounded to receive positive grades of execution on each of his remaining elements including a triple Lutz-triple toe which earned 11.20 points. Chan also received the highest program component score on his way to 87.95 total points.
Despite skating second-to-last, Takahito Mura of Japan, who finished fifth at the Japanese Championships, posted the second best score. Skating to “Red Violin”, Mura opened with a quad toe-triple toe which earned 15.97 points, the highest scoring element in the competition. He backed up his opening jump by receiving positive grades of execution throughout the remaining elements of his program. He earned a total of 83.44 points.
Daisuke Takahashi of Japan, who finished in second place at the ISU Grand Prix Final to Chan and in first place at the Japanese Championships, finished with the third best score in the short program after his “In the Garden of Souls” program earned him 82.59 points.
U.S. Championship medalists Ross Miner and Adam Rippon are in sixth and seventh place respectively. Miner posted a season-best score of 76.89 points for his “Para Ti” program which included a strong opening triple Axel and a triple-triple combination and Rippon earned 76.89 points for his “Korobushko” skate.
The men will perform their free skate on Friday at 7 p.m. MT with the top 24 finishers after the short program involved.
Also on Friday, the ladies will take to the ice beginning at 1 p.m. MT for their short programs. Newly crowned U.S. champion Ashley Wagner will skate for the first time since earning gold in San Jose, Calif. two weeks ago, while former World champion and Olympic silver medalist, Mao Asada of Japan will also compete. Bronze medalist at the U.S. Championships, and Colorado Springs resident, Agnes Zawadzki and the fourth-place finisher at the U.S. Championships, Caroline Zhang, will also compete.
