Summary of his play-by-play tweets for Pairs SP & Junior Men SP (hashtag is #2012LAOpen ) below:
[Marley/Brubaker Sr. Pairs exhibition] debut of spicy new SP. Fast, clean lines, full of charisma. “Hernando’s Hideaway”, indeed. Off 2 a great season!JR Pairs SP (3 teams competed):
Pfund & Reiss did a STRONG SP, BIG 2twist, Throw3sal, SBS DA. A bobble on lift, but FAST skating.
Liu & Perini are pitch-perfect to dueling banjos. SBS 2flip, trouble on lift & throw3sal–but cute program.
Calalang & Sidhu SBS DA, Throw3sal, great jazzy program.
JR Men SP (7 competed):
[Shotaro] Omori: 3axel-step out, 3lutz3toe-, 3flip+. An ambitious, Denis Ten-style program. Good stuff!
[Daniel] Samohin: 3lutz fall, DA2toe, 2flip. (????) Great program–intricate in the style of Rudi Cerne. He’s gonna b gr8!
[Vincent] Zhou: 3lutz3toe, 3flip, DA. Soon, this “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” will be vying to become master.
Nathan Chen–3axel on W/U…Lovely.
[Spencer] Howe: 3lutz2toe, DA, 3flip fall. Good program–maturing as a sk8r. He is the definition of a bean-pole; tall ‘n skinny.
[Jay] Yostanto: 3axel+, 3lutz2toe, 1flip. Groovy, 60s lounge-jazz new program. He’s improved his in-between a lot.
[Patrick] Leahy: 3toe2toe, 2flip, DA. Rough in moments, but as always, a beautiful Philip Mills program.
[Nathan] Chen (with no coach that I could see): 2axel fall out, awesome leveled ftwk, 3lutz3toe fall out, 3flip-. FAR more mature choreo.
I think missing the 3axel (he kind of waxeled the take-off & was lucky to get the dbl done) rattled Chen.
Make no mistake, tho–Chen’s 3axel is AWESOME…and he is raising the bar with the increase in maturity of that SP.
