Phaneuf out of Grand Prix Series, cites back injury
(07/11/2012) - Cynthia Phaneuf, the two-time Canadian champion and reigning national silver medalist, will skip the 2012 Grand Prix Series while she rehabs from a stress fracture in her back, the Canadian sports channel RDS reported Tuesday. While Phaneuf was not given an assignment in this fall's Grand Prix Series, Canada does have a "TBA" spot at 2012 Skate Canada it can fill with a skater of its choice.
The 24-year-old Quebec native, who trains with Brian Orser in Toronto, said she is aiming to make her season debut at the 2013 Canadian Figure Skating Championships.
Last season, Phaneuf claimed her fifth straight medal -- a silver -- at her country's national championships. In a well-publicized showdown at the 2012 Four Continents Championships that was to decide Canada's lone ladies representative at the 2012 World Championships, Phaneuf finished one place (0.18 points) behind Amélie Lacoste, who was given the spot. |
