Ice Dancing, Compulsory Dance
TheCompulsory Dance at NHK Trophy is the Argentine Tango. The ArgentineTango was created by Reginald J. Wilkie and Daphne B. Wallis. It wasfirst performed in London in 1934.
Isabelle Delobel/Olivier Schoenfelder of France took the lead whileCanadians Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir edged out Russia’s JanaKhokhlova/Sergei Novitski by less than one point for second place.
Delobel/Schoenfelderturned in a mature and sophisticated performance of the ArgentineTango, showing off strong edges and their experience. The EuropeanChampions picked up 38.96 points (19.94 element score/19.02 programcomponent score). “We did a nice compulsory tonight and we’re happywhat we did. There were quite a few people in the audience for thecompulsories and it was nice to compete for them”, Delobel commented.“We’ll just stay relaxed and we’ll do what we want to do. Each part ofthe competition is separate and we’re trying to show our best in eachpart”, she continued, referring to their lead of 4.32 points.
Virtue/Moirskated also a very elegant and clean Tango to score 34.67 points(17.36/17.31). It was actually the first time they competed this dancein international competition. “The Compulsory went really well. It wassimilar to how we were training it at home and we’re looking to buildon that for our performance tomorrow. As always we’re looking forwardto the next step”, Moir said. “I love the Tango, it’s actually one ofmy favorite dances”, Virtue added. “We’ve always enjoyed the Tango, also the OD last year. It’s passionate. We had more time to train theYankee Polka (for Skate Canada), because we were more focused on SkateCanada and we had only three weeks in between” (this event and SkateCanada), she continued.
Khokhlova/Novitski’s Argentine Tango waspassionate and strong as well, earning them 34.23 points (17.42/17.31).“We were surprised to see so many spectators as usually not so manypeople are coming to the compulsory dances”, Khokhlova said. “We skatedquite well, I think. We didn’t have a long break (since Trophee Bompardtwo weeks ago), but we still tried to prepare as well as we could.” Thecouple never skated the dance before in competition, but didn’t feelbothered by that fact. “This is one of the easier and older dances”,Khokhlova pointed out.
Sinead Kerr/John Kerr (GBR) came in fourth at 31.79 points followed by Kristin Fraser/Igor Lukanin (AZE) with 29.85 points.
