Bourne finds new dance partner
Bourne teams up with Tcherynshev
NEWINGTON, Conn. (AP) - Former world champion ice dancer Shae-Lynn Bourne of Chatham, Ont., will team with five-time U.S. champion Peter Tchernyshev, hopefully for Canada.
Bourne and partner Victor Kraatz, from Qualicum Beach, B.C., won the 2003 world title. Kraatz has since retired and Bourne was looking for another partner. She found him after Tchernyshev's partner, Naomi Lang, retired and had a baby. Tchernyshev was born in Russia, moved to the United States to become Lang's partner, and won five straight U.S. titles with her.
He plans to apply for Canadian citizenship and, if granted, will skate for Canada in the 2006 Olympics if he and Bourne qualify.
"I am so happy to have formed a partnership with Peter," Bourne said. "We are enjoying working together and believe our future in skating can be very exciting. I would love to be able to represent Canada again at the 2006 Olympics and we are doing everything we can to try to make that a reality."
Canadian officials were hopeful of having the duo represent the country in future competitions.
"We support Shae-Lynn in her decision to continue her skating career with Peter Tchernyshev. Shae-Lynn has always represented Skate Canada like a champion and our role is to help our athletes achieve their skating goals," said Pam Coburn, CEO of Skate Canada.
