NEW YORK - Sasha Cohen (news - web sites) has mastered her lessons well. So well that she finally beat Michelle Kwan (news - web sites).
For the first time in her senior career now in its fourth year, Cohen finished ahead of figure skating’s reigning queen, winning the International Skating Classic on Friday night. For the 19-year-old Cohen, it was a superb way to start the season.
"I think it is," Cohen said after a nearly spotless program featuring two triple-jump combinations and lots of energy. "It''''s telling me Michelle is someone I look at as someone I can learn a lot from. Well, you learned something, you paid attention."
A crowd of 9,713 was enraptured by Cohen''''s performance, the final one of the night. Kwan, a seven-time national champion and five-time world winner, also skated well, but wasn’t close to her younger rival, who swept the five-judge panel with all 5.8s for technique and 5.9s for presentation.
Of course, Kwan isn’t certain when she will be back in competition, not having entered any of this season''''''''s Grand Prix events. Cohen stamped herself as a favorite for the Grand Prix series she won last season.
"To win means I’m coming to that level," Cohen said. "There is a lot more pressure at other events. So many skaters forget when they are skating why they started. It’s because they love it. They make it a job. If you can put that aside and enjoy it, that’s my goal."
Kwan, skating to "Tosca" for the first time, had a shaky landing on a triple lutz and cut another to a single. Unlike Cohen, who was in midseason form, Kwan looked like she was debuting a routine.
"The summer was slow for me," said Kwan, who also recently changed her skates and is not yet comfortable with the new ones. "As I was going through the program, I would do (something) and say, `I need to work on this.''''''''
"It was definitely a survival of the fittest for me."
Despite a sore right knee, Evgeni Plushenko (news - web sites) looked like he never had a break from his sensational 2002-03 season in winning the men’s competition. While the other men looked rusty or bumbled through their free skates, the two-time world champion was on from the beginning.
The Russian nailed a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop jump at the outset, added a quad toe moments later and, after a clean triple axel, there was no question who would win.
As smooth as it looked, Plushenko said the performance was not an easy one to pull off.
"It was very difficult because I am injured," he said of the knee he hurt in an exhibition in Japan in late August. "I did not skate for two weeks.
"I’m so happy I did a good job at the beginning of the season. I feel strong, actually, but I am not 100 percent."
He said his back also has bothered him, but is not concerned about the injuries affecting him this season.
"We have good doctors in Russia, and they’ll help me," he said with a smile.
Goebel, who finished third behind Alexi Yagudin and Plushenko at the Salt Lake City Olympics, unveiled a new program to the "Queen Symphony." He was a bit stiff and didn’t even attempt a quad, which might seem odd for the U.S. "Quad King."
But Goebel said this was not the time to be trying a whole lot.
"I’m 100 percent healthy, but obviously not in the shape I want to be in," he said. "I’m t |
