A brief note to English viewers

This will be the first figure skating show in China. As you might not have known, S/Z once retired after winning 2007 Worlds and toured in many shows around the world, including Stars On Ice. They came back for Vancouver Olympics, won the first Gold for China and felt it is time to pursue their second dream, which is to promote figure skating in China. Their first step is to start the Artistry On Ice shows, partly inspired by SOI, and put their wedding ceremony into this debut.
China has very little figure skating culture, market nor fandom. It will be a tremendous endeavor to have the public understand figure skating as the art it is. It is simply amazing to see S/Z get committed to this life-long dream after the Gold at Vancouver.
This is the reason I took time to take down their words and translate it into English. Some of it may sounds very naive to you, but please remember that they, as such big stars in the West, are talking to a country and an audience who is almost ignorant of figure skating. Do take a look at Shen’s face when she speaks, an innocent little girl with such sweet dreams.

赵宏博(赵)：我们从今年打完奥运会之后一直有个愿望，这个愿望就是想把花样滑冰呢，能够有一天在中国举行花样滑冰的表演。今年呢确实在行程上安排得非常地紧，那么这也是我们两个人的除了奥运会的梦想以外的一个最大的梦想。因为这么多年了，很多人，包括企业啊包括以前的公司啊，都一直想把中国的花样滑冰的表演做起来，但是却没有做起来。那么我们两个人今年邀请了很多我们的朋友吧，普鲁申科啊亚古丁啊，这些我们多年在一起比赛的一些朋友，我们以婚礼的形式邀请他们，参加中国的花样滑冰表演，因为每年我们都会去参加Stars On Ice的演出。但是今年的表演整个在策划上啊编舞上，都有很明显的一个区别。因为这个东西它不是Starts On Ice，而是我们希望的在中国能够形成一个品牌，让大家更了解花滑，更了解花样滑冰的一些特点啊，它的一些除了比赛以外的东西。这是一场非常..最主要的一场是以演出为主的，所以我们在婚礼这个环节，其实就是还了申雪这么多年的，领证三年的愿望，也给小雪一个交代吧，还有双方父母的一个愿望。所以这个环节呢，其实是很简单的，可能大家到了现场之后呢，会有一种参加我们的party一样。我觉得这个对我们来说是一个非常浪漫的事情，因为现场有这么多的朋友，因为只要来到现场呢，他就是我的朋友，那么在这种欢乐的氛围当中，包括主持人的幽默还有和现场的互动，都会给大家一个非常亲近的感觉。因为往往是我们花样滑冰，大家感觉都是有一个很隔阂的东西，就好象有个很大的板墙，然后大家也是很远的距离看，运动员都是非常小。我们这一次一下就和观众近距离地拉近了，那么我们要感觉他们都来参加我们的婚礼。但是..(?)，刚才我一再强调说，这是一个冰上的盛宴，一个冰上的演出，那么我们会把重点放在演出的环节当中，很多的精彩的呈现，包括每一个选手的、他这种特点哪，包括普鲁申科的另外一种不同的..肯定大家是很多在网络上能找到，但是现场呢绝对会没有的。很多的选手呢也是，包括Johny Weir，他获得多次的美国的全美冠军，那么他表演的风格也完全于另外一种风格，很多人评论他是男版的Lady Gaga，很多人他喜欢这样的，所以他就跟我们提到了很多要求，哎呀你能不能让那个Johny Weir滑他这套很酷的动作呀。这些我们都尽量去满足大家。但是往往很多人提出的问题，还有一些要求，我们是不可能完全地去满足，只能说我们尽量，我们看到了自己博客当中反馈的意见，尽量地去回顾，尽量给让大家更好，这是我们尽量地做的。这么多年的努力，其实最想做的就是让大家更能更深地去了解花样滑冰是什么样。
Zhao Hongbo (Zhao): It has been our biggest post-Olympic dream to launch an ice show in China. For years our sponsors and agents have had this dream but have not been successful in putting this together. We have a very tight schedule this year to host the first of such shows. We invited many of our friends, such as Plushenko and Yagudin, with whom we have been competing and performing in shows such as Stars On Ice together all these years. We invited them to this show in China in the name of our wedding. However, we want our show to be different from SOI. We do not want to recreate a SOI, but rather a brand to introduce the performance side of figure skating to the Chinese audience. This is show is also dedicated to our wedding, as my wedding gift to Xue as well as to our parents. I wish everyone who comes to the show will enjoy it as if attending our wedding party. This is so romantic to us, everybody present would be our guest and friend, and I would also like to share the closeness and happiness with us. We have removed the boards in the coliseum, so that skaters could get really get close to the audience. This is such a feast on ice, as we will emphasize performance, including Plushenko and Weir. We will show the audience a different side of figure skating from competitions. You might have seen their performance in Internet videos, but it’s much different seeing them in person. We read the comments on our blogs and tried our best to invite all the stars you have wanted to see. We have been trying so hard all these years. What we went to do the most is to promote figure skating to Chinese people.

申雪(申)：今年的演出跟以往不同的，就是冰上没有板墙，因为以往的比赛都是会带板墙的，所有今年没有板墙，属于跟这些..运动员在场上的表演呢，跟观众的交流是比较近的，而且看台也要比每年中国举办国际比赛的场地，看台会往下拉，所以这是一个跟观众的很好的互动，也包括所有的运动员，有的运动员会，比如说，到场下跟观众互动一下，然后再回到场上滑冰。就是很多不同的地方吧，然后包括今年的表演也是带有舞台的，所有有很多新的一方面的东西在里头。
Shen Xue (Shen): Yes, we have removed the boards and added seats on ice, which get the audience much closer the skaters. Some skaters might even come in to the audience. We will also have a stage there.

申：我觉得花样滑冰运动就是，观众对于我们运动员的影响是非常大的，因为我们在一些表演当中啊，不希望观众在互相走动。就如果我们有一个选手在场上滑的时候，希望观众如果想走的话，希望能站在一个地方看完这个选手的表演，然后在他和下一个选手连接当中你去走动，这样的话对运动员不会有太大影响。因为有时候旁边一走动，包括所有发出的声音，包括你手机的铃声啊，都会对运动员有一个分心。因为我们要在场上做很高的难度动作，虽然是表演，但所有的运动员都会全力以赴，不会去做很简单的动作去糊弄观众。我们会做一些难度动作，当然要做难度动作肯定要有失败的因素在里面，所以我想就是尽量包括闪光灯啊对我们也是有影响，因为在空中会要转很快，所以闪光灯一闪的话会对眼睛都会有影响。其实观众是对运动员最大的鼓励，当你掌声越激烈，然后尖叫声越大的时候，运动员会反馈的信息就是我会滑得更有力量，然后更有激情，需要是跟现场观众是是一种互动的。如果观众觉得我非常非常喜欢这位运动员的话，他滑完这首曲子的话，也希望观众能够起立鼓掌，因为我们所有的运动员都是希望能把观众滑站起来，是我们最大的心愿。
Shen: The response of audience is very important to us. (省略中途退场云云，太囧了) Although this is a show, we will try our best to do some difficult stuff, that’s why I would like to remind you not to use flashlight, as the flash harms our eyes when we jump and spin. The audience are the greatest encouragement to us, as you applause and scream, we are skating with greater passion. If you do like some skater, please do give him/her a standing ovation, this has always been our happiest moment.

赵：庞清佟健、张丹张昊也是参加这次演出吧，我觉得他们今年的热点呢就是..看点呢就是看他们的今年的短节目。他们今年的编排呢，确实在这个编排上啊更细腻，而且我觉得今年要有一个非常好的突破。因为他们的节目，我们也看了，觉得非常地有特点，非常好。这是一个新赛季的开始，也是为了怕影响他们的比赛，所以我觉得今年的短节目他会在今年的表演当中去呈现给大家。
Zhao: Pang/Tong and Zhang/Zhang will perform their SP in this show too, of which the choreography I believe is very elegant. It is the start of the competitive season and they are busy. We also do not want to interfere with their training. So we asked them to perform their short programs.

赵：我们教练呢，他是这次演出的，怎么说呢，算总策划？（申：总监制吧！）而且我们教练说，条件(??)很大，他要弹钢琴，还要帮我们去设计很多的环节，包括一些细节上头，因为这几年的，在花样滑冰这个领域当中呢，我们教练，姚滨呢他确实也是，起到一个非常主要的作用，包括很多的演出啊，我们教练都参与到了导演和监制还有策划当中。所以我们教练这次是对我们两个人这么多年的师生感情，真是也是义无反顾地，说随叫随到，然后全力以赴地去帮助你们把这场演出做好。
Zhao: Our coach is our Chief Executor and Producer! He has requested big, he volunteered to play the piano and did a lot of detailing for us. He has been playing a very big part these years, for Chinese figure skating, including directing many of the shows. It’s such close relationship between us, he’s offering us tremendous help in this show.

赵：其实困难比我们想象得多很多吧，这些每一个环节都是在我们的总局的他们的支持还有我们那个经纪公司(公司名字没听清)整个公司团队的帮助，因为凭我们两个人的力量，说来吧到时候一起做演出吧，那肯定是不行的。因为中间请这些人来他们会安排他们很重要的行程，有的呢是把他们的行程都推掉了，为了参加我们的婚礼，或者说参加中国的这场演出。那么我们会把自己的东西拿出来，说邀请很多世界的名手，说你来吧参加我们的.. 因为很多人对中国不是很了解，就是现在很多的一线的选手，包括奥运会冠军啊世界冠军，他们都没来过中国，可能有一些选手来过中国，就是每年的中国杯啊，那很多选手都没有来过，所以我们会发出用我们自己的东西，去向这些人发出邀请，让他们来中国参加演出，也让他们感受中国的这些文化和中国热情的观众吧。
Zhao: Putting this show together has been much more difficult than we thought. The whole thing would be impossible without the support of Chinese Federation and our agent company. Many of our guest stars also made big sacrifices in order to skate in our wedding, which is also the first skating show in China. Many of them are not familiar with China, although some may have come to COC before. It’s our honor to invite them to this show in China and present some of our culture and people.

申：我觉得现在压力也挺大的，因为从整台晚会的各个的细节，包括所有运动员上下场的连接，都是很主要的一个环节。但是我希望能让所有的观众都满意吧，希望到时候他们会，怎么说能，能够在场上给我们多一些鼓励和多一些支持，因为今年毕竟是第一次，大家都是在尝试去做，有些地方可能会观众觉得不是很满意的，我觉得也可以反馈给我们，可以以后再加劲嘛对吧。所以我希望..
Shen: I do feel a lot pressure on myself, as there are so many details to be considered. I wish I could make everyone satisfied, and they could give us more support and encouragement at the scene. This is THE first time, every one of us is trying our best, please do give us your feedback if you see anything could be improved.

赵：现在网络的消息传得..并不是..其实我俩这一段很忙啊，但是很多的外界的对我们俩的影响也是很大的。有的时候我们会关注一些网络上的东西，然后呢想给大家一个很好的回馈，但是有些时候就事与愿违了，很多东西会影响到我们。现在我都基本不看网络了，网络很多的消息..其实我..因为很多东西会让我分心的，你想要把一个精彩的节目、这么大型的节目去呈现给大家的，有的人说好的东西，也有人说不好的东西，这都会有的，因为世界它总会有一些..你做的很多好事，也有人说你不好的东西。所以我们今天，有的时候我很少看网络了。
Zhao: I do feel sorry for some people have said on internet. (Chinese tabloid always speaks sh*t which upsets people who happens to take it seriously. Poor couple!)

申：对，我们现在两个主要是把精力放在训练上，和整体的一些彩排、编排上，我觉得这是我们两个最主要，也是最应该用心的地方。所以希望这台晚会能够圆满成功，是我们两个最大的一个梦想。
Shen: Yes, we now concentrate on training and designing the overall vision for the show. This is the things we do have control over, which deserve our greatest attention. Our dream is for the show to become a huge success.
Part 2 of 3 - 04’23” (12’37” in total)
申：我觉得这个最主要的，还要看第一场的演出是否观众喜爱。这是最最主要的。如果观众下来会要求的话我们会做。如果大家觉得又不是很好，或者怎么样呢，我们也会改进这些地方。我觉得最终怎么样呢，像我们呢运动员呢，还有一些演员啊，所有做出的努力都是为了给大家看的。
Shen: It’s very important that the audience love this first show. We will continue if you like it, and if you don’t, please tell us and we will improve. All what we did, our athletes and the other stars, are for your entertainment.
Part 2 of 3 - 04’50” (13’04” in total)
赵：我觉得现在都如同我参加奥运会一样，每一个环节都.. 奥运会呢其实它就是为了在每个动作的细节当中去很精益求精地去刻画。那么今年的演出呢，所有的东西整合，都是需要整个我们来策划和参与的，所以挑战是非常大的。我是希望这场演出是非常成功，得到大家认可的一场演出，这是我们的一个愿望吧。想要成为一个品牌，这是我们第二个梦想。因为每一年的表演的主题，今年的主题是爱与美，因为我们有这些喜庆的因素在里面。那么明年我们会突出另外一种，也许有一天你们会看到东北的小品在冰上演出，这都有可能。因为这种花样滑冰是可以让很多的思想去完全敞开的，你可以只要用一种艺术的形式在冰面上体现出来，观众就会喜欢。可能有朝一日，大家可能看到花样滑冰是一个完全不同的，和大家..非常好玩的一件事情。
Zhao: This is almost like the Olympic to me, so many details, it’s such a challenge. We do hope the show success and the audience loves it, this is our first dream. Our next dream is to establish this name (Artistry On Ice). This year our motto is Love And Beauty, dedicated to our wedding. Next year we may have another motto, in future it may be very open, even funny!

赵：因为今年我们可以说是一个转身吧，肯定是通过这一次的演出，我们可能向大家告知一个外界的我们退役啦，可能退役了领导会参加，也是送别吧，好像我不能再参加比赛了，因为拿到这个成绩之后包括年龄啊身体的反应啊，可能都会不行了。包括现在我的身体也是，虽然我现在这场演出呢，我还是在坚持着病痛去参加这场演出，其实就是为了向大家很好地呈现花样滑冰的另外的不同的一面。那么我们之所以做这么多的事情，其实就是为了推广花样滑冰。那么我们现在呢已经成立了一个“冰天使梦想计划”，这个呢主要就是为了青少年的培养，它可能会在这个训练的经费上啊，包括器材上，场馆上，训练基地上，都会为这些想要滑冰但是受经济影响的这些孩子们，包括一些有一些身体缺陷的，一些智障儿童啊，我们会通过各种渠道让他们也去感受花样滑冰是什么，然后让他们感受到这快乐。只要把快乐传递给每个人，其实这就是我们以后想要做的事情。
Zhao: This is also our retirement, where people come to say Goodbye’s. We are too old to compete in amateur level now. I even feel exhausted from injury preparing this show, but I’m willing to take every effort to promote figure skating in China. We are also establishing a funding project named Dream Ice Angles (my translation), to support young skaters financially in their training. We also want to pass this art to other children, especially those disabled. We want to pass this happiness to everyone. This will be our future endeavor.

Part 3 of 3 - 00’10” (16’30” in total) [Q: Is there anything new about the show?]
姚滨(姚)：因为这是一个首次的大型的这种..以前搞过很多，但是这次呢..这次比较综合的一台节目了。现在呢大家都在..我们也在排练他们的一些动作，尽量和..影星也好歌星也好体育界的所有的这些明星也好，这是一个综合的节目。但是我们尽量想搞一台，就是说有点特色，区别于国外搞的这个表演系列节目，又区别于比赛，我们现在主要是这么一个思路。
Yao Bin (Yao): (He is kinda caught unprepared by the reporter and not quite ready to answer the question logically. LOL)
Part 3 of 3 - 01’01” (17’22” in total) [Q: How is this different from competition?]
姚：当然了包括舞台、舞美、灯光，然后包括运动员的动作。但是运动员的表演的内容呢，不会有太大的变化。因为这个东西它是成型的，不可能..但是我们有一些集体节目现在正在编排当中，要搞新颖一点，这就跟其他表演不一样了。
Yao: The stage design, the choreography, the lighting, etc. will all be different from competitions. We are trying to come up with some unique and interesting group programs.
Part 3 of 3 - 01’33” (17’54” in total) [Q: How is the level of difficulty of S/Z program, compared to Vancouver OG?]
姚：这个可能也要有区别的，因为表演是表演，比赛是比赛。花样滑冰它有一个特点就是表演的时候他能拿出百分之六十到七十的难度就不错啦。特别是职业运动员和业余运动员这个不一样，这个表演形式都不一样，动作不会完全是以难度为准，而是以音乐啊包括剧情啊，根据这个来需要来去编排。
Yao: It would be very nice if a skater could show 60% of his technical capability in a show. Also you could not expect a professional skater to do the same as an eligible skater. Figure skating shows focus more on the music and the story rather than just level of difficulty.

姚：会有的。然后有很多环节呢，有一些跟以往不一样的环节。当然这个呢不便透露，现在都在策划当中，也在编排当中。
Yao: Yeah, we are working on something unusual ... and very secret!
Part 3 of 3 - 02’36” (18’57” in total) [Q: We have special guests as Jane Zhang and Siqing Lv, how will they collaborate?]
姚：这个是..好像是目前在国内..以前没有搞过的嘛。他们单独有演唱，也有运动员在场上来配合，下一步还要合练。主要是根据音乐的主题，根据音乐的思想，包括整个舞台啊，整个剧情来安排的。
Yao: Yeah we have never had shows like this before. They will have their solos, as well as joint performances with our skaters. Everything goes with the music and the bigger story.
Part 3 of 3 - 03’10” (19’32” in total) [Q: How’s S/Z?]
姚：现在都不错！准备都挺好。然后他们天天都训练，天天跟我们正常比赛运动员一起在训练，然后也在搞些编排。他们现在很忙啊，这个事务事太多了。
Yao: Excellent! They are busy, but they train every day, with other skaters who are still competing.
Part 3 of 3 - 03’32” (19’52” in total) [Q: How’s P/T and Z/Z? Do you choreograph for them too?]
姚：参与！然后我们马上就要进入一个集体节目的编排。整台晚会呢是以这个花样滑冰，包括国际一些比较知名的运动员，然后也包括咱们国内的双人滑的运动员，好多运动员都要上场去，因为这台节目要力推中国的花样滑冰就是双人滑，在奥运会啦也好以后的发展的前景也好，这么一个前提，都有这么一个环节在里面。
Yao: I do. We are heading into a group number. The entire show has many guest stars, including some well-known skaters in the world. However, one of our themes is to promote Chinese figure skating, especially pair skating.
Part 3 of 3 - 04’17” (20’38” in total) [Q: Will this show continue next year?]
姚：我希望将来能继续下去。因为在国外有这么几个品牌吧，常年在这么持续。我希望在中国也能有这么一个品牌，像雅姿也好，这个品牌成立以后，年年在中国我们也能搞一个系列的表演。这个对推广花样滑冰也好，不仅是在中国，而且在世界上也有咱们中国花样滑冰的一个位置。这个我觉得它的意义是在这里边。
Yao: I do hope so. There are quite a few regular skating shows abroad. I wish we could establish something similar, regular shows with a well known band name, like Artistry On Ice. I wish China could have a place in the world in this arena.
Part 3 of 3 - 05’00” (21’21” in total) [Q: Can you comment on foreign stars such as Plushenko and Asada?]
姚：这个点评的话就比较专业性了。每个运动员都不一样，这里边亚古丁也好，还有这个Johny Weir，就很多优秀运动员都有他的一个特点。在不同的比赛，有世界锦标赛、奥运会都拿过很好的成绩。那么这次他们能来到中国，来参加这个表演呢，我觉得很大一部分一是咱们这个花样滑冰现在比较强大，另外小雪宏博他们的个人魅力也在里面。他们也是通过组织啊通过个人关系..他们也在..也是对推广中国花样滑冰也好，也是一个很好的平台。这些运动员呢我们都比较熟悉，然后在国际比赛上经常在一起碰面。我觉得他们能来还真是我意料之外(笑)，原来我没想象他们都能来！
Yao: I would not go into technical stuff. We have many big names on our roster. I am grateful that they have agreed to come. One reason might be that we are becoming one of the world power in figure skating, and another might be S/Z’s charisma. They have participated shows in the West these years and have served as unofficial ambassadors for Chinese skating. It surprises me they would come, I never thought these skaters are willing to come to this event!
Part 3 of 3 - 06’15” (22’36” in total) [Q: Will we see “Chinese elements” in their (foreign stars’) programs?]
姚：节目当中不一定能有太多。因为大家这次筹备的时间比较短，不会有太多的刻意的安排。他可能有他们自己的节目。但是可能在这场晚会的现场呢，可能有很多的国外的运动员他们要参与一些环节，包括小雪宏博他们俩要有一个婚礼的过程，要参与这个过程。
Yao: I don’t think so, as all of us have very little time to prepare. The other stars might use their own programs. But there will be a lot of improvised performances in the show. And there will be a wedding for them to attend!
