Slutskaya Returning After Heart Problem
Former world champion Irina Slutskaya (news - web sites) expects to compete next month after being sidelined with a heart problem she once thought might end her career.
The Russian figure skater was hospitalized with pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac around the heart; chronic asthmatic bronchitis; and pneumonia. Doctors said the cause of the heart problem was not known.
After battling the illnesses for two months, she received a clean bill of health on Sept. 20 and slowly got back to practicing. Slutskaya plans to compete in the Cup of Russia Grand Prix event in Moscow from Nov. 19-23 and the NHK Trophy the following week in Japan.
Slutskaya fell ill at the end of the Champions on Ice Tour last summer.
"She was coughing and had a fever and took medication at home," her agent, Ari Zakarian, said Sunday. "But the illness continued and she went to a hospital and was told she had to stay there because of the heart problem."
Slutskaya told Zakarian she feared she would never skate competitively again. The 2002 Olympic silver medalist "was devastated," Zakarian said. "She said, `This is it. I'm done.' "
When doctors released her from the hospital, Slutskaya was told she could resume practicing. At first, she told Zakarian she was "a little weak and off-balance." By her second day back on ice, though, she was doing some triple jumps and now is practicing all of her elements.
It's been a difficult year for Slutskaya. She missed the world championships in March while dealing with her mother's battle with kidney illness. Slutskaya drives her mother, who is on a transplant waiting list, to a hospital three days a week for dialysis treatment.
Slutskaya is the only woman, other than Michelle Kwan (news - web sites), to win worlds since 1999. She also is a two-time world silver medalist, and in 1996 won bronze at worlds.
In 1999, after a disappointing season in which she failed to make the Russian team for the world championship, Slutskaya considered retirement. She'd gained weight, which caused her problems with her jumps and her timing.
But after getting married in August 1999, she decided to stay in the sport and has been a force ever since.
