Mikimoto has recently finished a collaboration with Japanese fashion designer, Yumi Katsura, to create a stunning wedding dress embroidered with 13,262 Akoya pearls. The indulgent wedding dress was donned by World Figure Skating Champion, Miki Ando, at a press conference in Tokyo on 15th February this year. The dress, that used one large sheet of beautiful guipure lace made of rose and arabesque patterns, is completely seamless to look as if it were made of one single piece of fabric. It took around six months to make: three months to create the base, and another three months to embroider 13,262 Akoya pearls into this amazing garment. And the price? 35,000,000 yen (approximately 264,000). It was certainly a splendid way to use Mikimoto’s famed Akoya pearls. Akoya pearls can grow up to about 10mm – those above 8mm are very rare. The dress used Akoya pearls ranging from 3-10mm, including five that were 10mm in size. The dress is now set for a world tour, going on show in Beijing, Shanghai, New York and Paris.
