the very beginning:
Maria Butyrskaya - was born on June 28, 1972 in the city of Moscow, Russia. When Maria was five years old her mother took her to the rink near their home. After a while she was invited to train at the famous club (ZSKA) and that's how is all began.
After being trained by her coach (Galina Titkow) for a year, she said that Maria did not have any perspectives. She wasn't allowed to continue training at the club.
At the age of fifteen Maria wanted to stop skating, she did not skate for three month. But something kept Maria close to skating and after a while she began looking for a new coach and new beginning.
Maria is known for her unique, elegant, classical style of skating and strong ability to jump. She was able to performed the triple axel in practice, but was often bitten by her nerves. After ups and downs in the career of the figure skating many people probably thought that she will never make it. But they were wrong... Noting could stop her from getting to the top, not even Russian Federation.
On March 27, 1999 Maria Butyrskaya, at 26, won World Figure Skating Championships that were held in Helsinki, Finland. She became the oldest-ever world women's champion. All the hard times and training finally paid off. She had reached one of her goals.
Maria had a great 1998-1999 skating season. She intends to challenge for the gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Games. When Maria stops competing as an amateur she plans to become a choreographer and costume designer. She studies design in Moscow and is already know for designing her own figure skating costumes.

Galina Titkowa was Maria's coach- her 3rd. After "Masha" as 4 year old had begun figure skating and had won every organized novice event, the coach proposed that the child should try out her luck at the famous sport-club of the "Red Army"(ZSKA). Today I still think it was a coincident that my name showed up on the list of the children who were let into the club, Maria believe. "I can't recall having seen a coach who looked at me." Whether it was a coincident or not- After all the child was selected and came to a young and enthusiastic coach. There Maria soon belonged to the best in her group. A couple of years later the coach got pregnant and the club had to divide the kids all over. Maria came into the group lead by Elena Wodorezowa, the former European- and World Championship medalist, When Wodorezowa also got pregnant , the young skater landed by a certain Galina Titkowa. "I didn't like her at all". Maria recalls.
After having trained with her for a year she threw me out. She said, I hadn't got any perspectives. " That meant the end of her training time at ZSKA. Those with no perspectives weren't allowed to continue at the club."
"At that time I was about 15 years old and wanted to stop skating." For three months Maria didn't skate. However it isn't so easy to get rid of figure skating. She looked for a new coach. Not many were left in Moscow from which she could choose- Viktor Kudryatsev and Vladimir Kovalew. She called Kovalew who spontaneously invited her to a training session in the Ukraine. "Two hours later, I stood at the train station", Maria laughs. "My mother brought me my skates.
