It's official: Arakawa to turn pro
"Last night, the press (NHK) received a fax sheet from Shizuka Arakawa, and it said that she is going to announce of her future tomorrow (today). Arakawa has always said that she wanted to do shows as pro. She has already announced she would skip the GP series this season."
The slender 24-year-old, the 2004 world champion, said in a press statement that she was to make an announcement about her "competitive activities in the future" at a news conference later Sunday.
Although she reportedly plans to end her competitive career, Arakawa will go on skating professionally at ice shows in Japan, the United States and Europe, and continue training at her bases in Yokohama and Simsbury, Connecticut.
"I don't think it necessary to force yourself to choose between being professional and amateur," Arakawa said after her Turin feat. "You'd rather train yourself if you feel like competing. It makes no big difference."
Arakawa started figure skating at the age of five and landed her first triple jumps at nine. She finished 13th in her Olympic debut at the 1998 Nagano Games and did not compete in the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.
