Johnny Weir has the reputation of saying exactly what’s on his mind, making him one of the sport’s more quotable stars and a media magnet. He just can’t get everything said in sound bites! His interest in skating began at age 12 after getting a second-hand pair of skates for Christmas. A natural athlete with a classical style and elegant presentation, (he credits his posture to his background as an equestrian), Johnny rose quickly in the skating world to win the World Junior title in 2001, followed by three consecutive senior national titles (2004-06) and a trip to the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, where he placed 5th. His candidness and great skating ability have allowed him to develop a huge fan base the world over. Johnny, 22, trains in Newark, Delaware with long-time coach Priscilla Hill, but he also coaches and choreographs programs for other competitors. His interest in fashion led to designing costumes for other skaters as well as himself and appearing in a fashion show for Heatherette and modeling for Blackbook magazine. Off ice he studies Czarist history, cultivates Russian culture and is learning to speak the language. For his 21st birthday he received a miniature long-haired Chihuahua puppy he promptly named Vanya (Johnny in Russian).
