South Korea's figure skating star Kim Yu-na is taking a cautious attitude toward her ranking allocation at the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating, which she expects will see a very high level competition.
Kim, 16, will participate in the third and fifth Grand Prix from Nov. 8 to 11 in Beijing and from Nov. 22 to 25 in Moscow, respectively.
'' After knowing the other 11 participants, I thought the Beijing Grand Prix would be the highest level competition,'' she said.
'' Italy's Carolina Kostner and Japan's Fumie Suguri are top-level players. And Finnish Susanna Poykio and Chinese-American prodigy Caroline Zhang are also good enough to seek high rankings. Compared to the other five Grand Prix, it will be the toughest to win,'' Kim's management agency quoted Kim as having said.
Kim, who won the gold medal at the final of the Grand Prix Figure Skating in her first senior stage last year, was positive on performing in China and Russia.
'' Except for the long distance from Canada where I am training, I don't have any complaints. Three years ago, I took part in the Junior Grand Prix in Harbin and came second. The quality of ice was fine that time so I think it won't be difficult to adjust to the ice,'' she said.
'' Compared to the Beijing contest, it will be less competitive. Suguri will also be there and since talented Japanese Yukari Nakano and Canadian Joannies Rochette, I won't let my guard down.''
Meanwhile, Kim, the third placer of the ISU World Figure Skating Championships last March, dismissed speculation by local media indicating Caroline Zhang as a dark horse.
The 13-year-old prodigy is the 2006 Junior Grand Prix Final Champion and 2007 World Junior Champion.
'' I don't want to evaluate her. Although I have never competed against her, she is a junior-level figure skater. Rather than she, Kostner and Suguri look more talented,'' she said.
Kim, who attends Suri High School in Gyeonggi Province, revealed her ambition during a news season.
'' I swore to my self that if I do my best in training and maintain my condition during the off-season, good results will follow. From now, I will focus on staying in good condition as well as preparing for my new short program and free skating.'' |
