Why I will live in the United States!
>Why do you leave?
If I want to continue competing on a high level, I have to change something.
>Wasn't it possible to stay in Switzerland?
I couldn't achieve something better when staying in Switzerland, no.
>Where was the problem?
In Geneva, it was hard. When I needed to create something, to repeat a jump, it wasn't easy to tell me: "OK, I will work for an hour now, then it will be over." At the ice rink of Vernets, a club needed the ice rink too, the schedule had to be respected, the public would arrive.
>Even for a double world-champion...
That doesn't make a difference in Switzerland. In the United States, there's a guarantee that everything will be different. When I will need three hours to make a mouvement perfect, I will have three hours.
>What couldn't offer your trainer of 13 years, Peter Grütter, any longer?
With Mr. Grütter we had reached the point where everything went well, the training, everything. He had taught me what he knew, I was World Champion thanks to his knowledge. But there was the little something more missing that I will look for with Viktor Petrenko. Now it's time for a change. The Olympics in Vancouver will already be in 2 years!
>Why Petrenko?
He's outstanding. I didn't think of a country, but of a person. My worry was that he was already training Johnny Weir. Before I asked Viktor, I asked Johnny if it troubled him when I would come. He answered: "No problem!". In his training, he is alone. Both of us will have an additional motivation. The neighborhood will boost us.
>What is New Jersey like?
It's something between countryside and industrial zone. Not much to do except from training (he laughs). Don't imagine me on Broadway! I will live 10 minutes from the ice rink, I will loose a minimum of time travelling.
>New York is 40 minutes away...
If I leave, it's for training above all and to find a place where I will grow. I won't loose time in auditions.
>This city is very attractive, with your qualities and your interest in the world of art..
I will take some classes in a dance studio on Broadway for sure. I will watch lots of ballets, lots of shows, musical comedies.
>An inspiration in general?
Yes. And Viktors wife is a former dancer. She likes to go to shows, she will take me with her. We have already taken jazz classes. She knows lots of people. There are so many talented people who live in that universe. I will be exciting to discover it and to use it for my sport.
>Your next program will be inspired by New York?
Yes, it will be close to Broadway style. When you arrive there, you are overwhelmed by this atmosphere. It will be blues, jazzy, with musical comedy. Something quite outstanding. I'm looking forward to start working there. Until Vancouver 2010 I have found what I was looking for.
>It's another chapter in your personal life...
I will be far from my friends, from my family. They have already said: "We will be with you the whole month of August!". But I still have to go to training... My mother is a bit sad, of course. On the other side, she knows that I have made this decision for my best, for my career. I have such a lot of things to learn from Viktor.
>Will you come back?
For the moment, my plan is to come back after the Olympics 2010 and to build my life in Switzerland. But maybe I will like to stay over there. It's open.
>What will you take with you for sure?
My skates. And my computer, my webcam. I will use them a lot.
>In which state of mind do you leave?
There's something I'd like to say: I don't regret anything I have done until now, the chapters I have lived, the people I have chosen. I'm thankful for their work, I could do what I dreamed of, with the people I liked. That's important. |
