Belbin, Agosto dance to a new tune after coaching switch
By Janice Lloyd, USA TODAY
When U.S. ice dancers Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto step onto the rink at Skate America on Friday, they know the figure skating world will be watching.
After finishing fourth at the world championships last March, a result that Agosto described as a "slap in the face," the duo left behind its longtime coaches in Detroit for a new home near Philadelphia. What IceWorks in Aston, Pa., held for them was an opportunity to train with married Russian coaches Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov, Olympic champions whose skaters have dominated Olympic and world competitions.
"I think by the end of the year and going into world championships we'll have programs that if skated well are unbeatable," Belbin said. "Skate America will be the first step."
Belbin and Agosto's silver medal at the 2006 Turin Games set them on a path to become the best U.S. ice dancers in history. They enter this season shooting for a record sixth U.S. championship and the first gold medal for the USA at worlds.
"People will want to see what we've been able to achieve with these new coaches," Belbin said. "They have a reputation for training champions and a lot of people are imagining that they must have this magic wand."
Ice dancing is the only discipline of the four in skating that still requires compulsories in which all skaters repeat the same skill set.
Belbin had a rare fall in compulsories at worlds last year during their Tango. They went into the original dance in fifth place after coming into the event as favorites. World champions Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France are scheduled to compete at Skate America.
Belbin said this year their compulsories are better. "What we've learned is amazing," she said. "I see it coming through our skating little by little."
She said the changes translate to more power, speed and confidence.
"We want to look more assured on our blades, so there's never any question we're the best ones out there on the ice every time we compete," she said.
Agosto said working with Linichuk and Karponosov is "like learning to skate all over again as opposed to just learning a new style."
Another departure: They perform their free dance to Tosca, a Puccini opera that Belbin said breaks away from their lighter, happier side.
"It's the most mature work we've ever done," Agosto said. "It's going to be showing a new side of our personalities. It's tragic and passionate and intense."
They selected the music at the Newark, Del., home of their coaches, sitting together for several nights after practices and listening to a stack of CDs. "We kept saying, 'No, no way,' " Agosto said.
Then Linichuk played Tosca.
"We didn't know if it was our style," said Belbin, who then heard from her coach.
"She said, 'You have no style. You are a blank slate right now. You have barely tapped the surface of what you can achieve and you're really going to break through.' "
For the duo entering its 10th competitive year together, that inspirational talk was all it took to be sold on Tosca and a new style.
"We're really very lucky. We're in great hands," Belbin said. "They know what it takes to become champions."
