Ladies Highlight Saturday at Four Continents
American Ashley Wagner earned the gold medal while Mao Asada of Japan earned silver and American Caroline Zhang earned the bronze in the ladies event at the 2012 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships at the World Arena on Saturday night.
Skating second in the final group, Wagner was second after the short program behind Asada but earned an ISU personal best score for her free skate and the top score of the night by nearly four points. Wagner opened her “Black Swan” skate with a triple flip-double toe-double toe combination worth 8.90 points and also earned positive grade of executions throughout her performance. Wagner finished with a total score of 192.41.
Asada skated after Wagner and posted the top single element score, 10.29 points for her triple flip-double loop-double loop, but received negative GOEs on two jumps. The two-time World champion and Olympic silver medalist earned a total of 188.62 points overall.
Opening the final group, Zhang posted a personal best score of 117.44 for her free skate. Zhang earned positive grades of execution throughout her performance and the second highest element score of the night. Zhang earned her second Four Continents bronze, equaling her finish from 2010.
Colorado Springs resident Agnes Zawadzki finished sixth overall in her Four Continents debut.
In the pairs competition, all three American teams stand in medal contention. Trailing China’s Wenjing Sui and Cong Han are Caydee Denney & John Coughlin in second place followed by teammates Mary Beth Marley & Rockne Brubaker in third. Just six points separate the leaders from the third American team, Amanda Evora & Mark Ladwig, in fifth place.
Sui and Han executed a nearly flawless short program featuring a throw triple flip that earned a GOE of 2.10 points. They added side by side triple toes and a throw triple Lutz. They totaled 66.75 points for the day. Speaking to the media after the short program, Han confirmed that the team will attempt two quadruple throw elements in Saturday’s free skate.
Denney and Coughlin, the newly minted U.S. champions, skated on home ice to a season’s best score of 63.35 points. Their program included a throw triple Lutz and four level 4 elements.
Marley and Brubaker had a slight bobble when she two-footed the landing on their throw triple Lutz but otherwise turned out their best performance of the season. They earned 62.42 points.
In a competition where four of the top five finishers from the 2011 World Championships were in the final group, reigning World champions Meryl Davis & Charlie White of the United States hold a slim lead over Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir of Canada and Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje of Canada.
Davis & White’s short dance score was 72.15. Reigning Olympic champions, Virtue and Moir earned the top component score but fell just short in their elements. Their short dance total was 71.60. In third place after the short dance with 64.23 points, Weaver & Poje earned positive grades of execution throughout and they lead Americans and reigning World bronze medalists Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani by 0.85 points.
On Sunday, the pairs and ice dancing competitions will come to a conclusion at Noon and 2:45 p.m. (MT), respectively. The Skating Spectacular, an exhibition featuring the top finishers at the event, will begin at 7 p.m. (MT). |
