First Medals Awarded on Friday
Patrick Chan of China earned the first gold medal of the 2012 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships as he topped the field in the men’s event on Friday night at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Chan opened his free skate with two high-scoring jumps, a quad toe-triple toe combination worth a competition-high 16.54 points and a quad toe worth 12.16 points. He earned both the top element score and the top program component score for his free skate that earned a total of 185.99 points on Friday. He ended the competition with a total score of 273.94.
Despite finishing third in the short program, Daisuke Takahashi of Japan earned 161.74 points for his free skate for a silver-medal finish. Takahashi struggled on his opening quad toe and a later triple Axel-triple toe combination but executed the rest of his program well. Overall, Takahashi earned a total score of 244.33.
From three spots off the podium after the short program, American Ross Miner skated his way to a bronze medal two weeks after earning a medal of the same color at the U.S. Championships in San Jose, Calif. Miner opened his program with three elements which earned more than 10 points each and finished with the fourth-best free skate and the third best total of 223.23.
American Adam Rippon, the silver medalist at the 2012 U.S. Championships, jumped up three places from seventh to fourth with the third best free skate score.
Earlier on Friday, Mao Asada of Japan built a narrow lead after the ladies short program over U.S. champion Ashley Wagner and Kanako Murakami of Japan.
Asada opened her program with a triple Axel which was under-rotated, but rallied to receive positive grades of execution through the rest of her program. Skating to “Sheherazade”, the two-time World champion earned the highest program component score and a total of 64.25 points.
Two weeks after winning her first U.S. title, Wagner skated confidently and earned 64.07 points for her “Pollock” short program. Wagner opened with a triple flip-triple toe combination and earned positive grades of execution throughout. Her point total is a new personal best and she is in prime position heading into the free skate.
In third position, Murakami also landed a strong triple-triple combination jump to begin her short program. She earned level fours on all of her spins and totaled the top element score in the competition. She earned a total of 63.45 points.
After the top three, there is a nearly five-point gap to American Caroline Zhang who is in fourth place with 58.74 points. American and Colorado Springs resident Agnes Zawadzki is in sixth with 52.87 points.
The ladies will perform their free skate at 7 p.m. MT on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the pairs competition will begin with the short program at 1 p.m. MT and the short dance competition will begin at 3:30 p.m. MT. |
