Mao Asada, 13 of Japan, who is now most commonly known for her technical ability, wasnt a big name to many skating fans. She opened the season with winning both her Junior Grand Prix assignments. She accumulated points for winning these which qualify her for the Junior Grand Prix final. Mao will skate in the final on December 2nd – 5th, in Helsinki Finland.
"I hate losing, and I'm not good at hiding my feelings," she says. Her dream, like many other young aspiring skaters, is to win an Olympic gold medal. Although only a few have the talent to do so, Mao has certainly shown she has it in her. To try and make the dream a reality, she trains four to five hours a day practicing every day alongside her sister Mai. Mai is also a very talented young skater, she finished 4th at the 2004 World Junior Championships. "Sometimes when I'm doing badly with my jumps, I take it out on my sister!"
Asada normally attempts the triple axel in her long, and is usually successful in landing it although its slightly under-rotated. A few of the other Japanese skaters attempt this jump, this includes Aki Sawada, Aki is also a promising Japanese skater who came 5th at the World Junior Championships this year and will compete against Mao in the Junior Grad Prix Final. Midori Ito has been the Japanese skater who has had most success in landing this technically very difficult and demanding jump in competition.
So, will the triple axel jump give Asada the edge in the Final, we will need to wait and see.
