Shen/Zhao opened their program to “Romanza” with an excellent side by side triple toeloop, followed by a huge throw triple loop and a level-four spiral sequence. But their death spiral was laboured and their side by side spin went out of sync when he left out one of the positions. The finished with a difficult lift and a pair combination spin that was graded a level four by the Technical Panel to pick up 65.58 points (34.26 element score/31.32 program component score). “We’re not very satisfied with today’s performance, because of the mistake in the spin. I got stuck in a rut on the ice, caught the edge and twisted my foot. The first mark was rather low because of the mistake. We also didn’t have much practice time here in Japan, and the quality of the ice wasn’t too good”, Zhao explained.
Skating to “Spanish Caravan” and “Hello Dolly”, Zhang/Zhang hit a big triple twist, a throw triple loop and earned a level four for their lift, the side by side combination spin, the spiral and the pair combination spin. However, Hao Zhang fell on the side by side triple Salchow. The Olympic silver medalists scored 63.82 points (35.42/29.40). “I’m not happy because of the fall”, Hao Zhang said. “I hope we’ll show our best skating tomorrow in the free program.” Dan Zhang added: “For us, improving our performance is more important than the placement.”
Marcoux/Buntin’s program to the Rhumba “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White” featured a side by side triple toeloop, a high double twist and an interesting one-armed lift with a cartwheel exit, but she fell on the throw triple loop at the end. The Canadian Champions were awarded 55.62 points (30.38/26.24). “It (the reason for the mistake) was the timing between both of us, we were not together, but I have really no excuse”, Marcoux commented. “We were a little bit shaky, but our practices have been going well this week and I hope we can go out and enjoy the program tomorrow”, Buntin said.
Utako Wakamatsu/Jean-Sebastien Fecteau (CAN) finished fourth at 53.40 points. She touched down with her hand on the throw triple loop. Julia Obertas/Sergei Slavnov (RUS) are sitting in fifth place. She went down on the triple toe and the throw triple loop (48.62 points).
