THE WORLD is full of people deserving of our admiration, but not all of them provide inspiration for hope, change and wide-ranging reforms that would affect not just a handful, but an entire country.
Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi; Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo of China; Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao; Indian wrestlers Geeta and Babita Kumari, Suman Kundu, Nirmala Devi and Anita; Filipino singer Charice Pempengco; Indonesian Sri Mulyani Indrawati; Korean figure skater Kim Yu-Na; Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed; and China’s military commission vice chair Xi Jinping.
They are some of the people who served as inspiration to many in 2010. On the list of AsiaNews icons, they give us hope that the world—not only Asia—will be a better, wiser world because of the lessons their lives teach us.
AsiaNews is the magazine of Asia News Network, a group of 21 newspapers, including the Philippine Daily Inquirer, in 18 countries.
With a myriad of female successes, 2010 gave many Korean women a reason to celebrate considering that Korea remains a male-dominated Confucian society.
That makes Kim Yu-Na, the U-17 women’s soccer team and Girls’ Generation’s achievements all the more commendable.
Kim dominated the figure skating scene, holding records for the highest points in short program, free skating and overall points.
Kim won gold for her performances in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, the second Asian to do so in figure skating. She also holds the title for the 2009 Grand Prix.
