Weir had a disastrous practice Friday morning, but in his short program he still opened up with a triple Axel. It looked like all would be well.
Then he suddenly fell.
“I fell on nothing,” Weir said. “I have no idea (what happened). I think I went a little crazy with my arm and knocked myself over. It was funny. I wanted to laugh when I got up, but it's competition and you can't do that.”
He said he was tired.
“I slept three hours since I have been in St. Petersburg,” he said. “That can play a part when you are trying to be a good sportsman. It is rough out there.”
However, he pointed out that a number of the U.S. athletes who qualified for the Grand Prix Final have had difficult seasons.
“It has been a very rough year for the Americans who have made it here,” he said. “In general Tanith, Ben, Evan and I did the entire tour through August and had no time to prepare. It is not an enviable position but at the end of the day we have to pay our bills so we do the tour to make out money.”
