Q: How do you feel heading for Worlds?
▶ Kim: The most important competition of the season is the only one left now. I’m worried a bit because it’s been a while since I skated at Worlds and at a huge ice rink. I’ve skated in front of a large audience at the Korean Nationals held at the Mokdong ice rink. And since I’ve had the experience of skating at two competitions without major mistakes, I think that if I can skate as I do in practice, good results will follow. Q: What is your goal for Worlds?
▶ Kim: The number of skaters each country will be allowed to send to the Sochi Winter Olympics will be decided depending on the results of this season’s World Championships. My goal is to earn at least 2 spots so that I can go to the Olympics with a fellow skater and not alone. I want my fellow Korean skaters to have the opportunity to experience the Games. Winning 3 spots would be much better but since the ice is slippery, my goal is to at least secure 2 spots. Other than that, my goal is to show the audience everything that I’ve prepared and trained. Anyone can make mistakes depending on their condition or nerves. So considering that, I am trying not to overburden myself by my personal expectations. I am striving to skate in a relaxed state of mind, without burdening myself. Q: How is your physical condition right now?
▶ Kim: I know that I started the season pretty late but I worked to lower the rate of mistakes and loss of stamina towards the end of the program. It’s gotten a lot better compared to when I started the season. However you only get one shot at competitions regardless of your physical or psychological state. So mistakes can happen. But unless there is an upset, I think I can skate well. Q: How would you compare your current condition to that of yourself at the Vancouver Olympics?
▶ Kim: I don’t think I can compare myself with my condition at the Olympics. When I train, I find things have changed since then. Some things take more out of me compared to the past. I need to work harder to maintain my stamina as well. So I really can’t compare myself to then. I am doing the best I can do at this current moment and I’m sure that I have prepared well. Q: You will be skating against Mao Asada
▶ Kim: When I returned to competition, I never specified the name of any particular skater, and I have never done so in the past as well. As I mentioned before I am trying not to overburden myself with expectations. I meant that I am striving to skate without burdens. I understand that as a human being you can get greedy for more. But I never personally mentioned Mao Asada or any other skater by name after I made my comeback. And yet it seems that other people are much interested in comparing us two. It’s difficult not to feel pressure from all of that. So to tell the truth it’s too bad it keeps coming up. But I know I can’t avoid all of that. I’ve been constantly compared to other skaters, including Mao Asada up until now. I’m trying to skate with a lighter heart compared to the past and I’m sure that Mao Asada will try her best as well. I will do my best and I am trying to think of only that. Q: Any final words?
▶ Kim: I’ve lived quite a while in Canada, where the competition will be held. I think of Canada as my second home. I feel very comfortable and familiar there. It’s been a while since I’ve competed at Worlds. I am well aware that many people have high expectations and that there are also a lot of people rooting for me as well. I’ve trained hard to live up to those expectations and I will do my best so that I can skate my full potential. Thank you.
