skipped the introduction, it mostly talkes about Russian skaters arriving. Vasiliev talked to the press after the draw:
- We spent the final training in St. Petersburg. It was OK. We didn’t advertise the we were in town so the reporters didn’t bother us. We got a little medical treatment, when through a complete exam, and got needed recommendations. Tania felt a little sick only twice in the last two weeks, but it was very insignificant.
As for coming to Torino late, Vasiliev said,
- It wasn’t necessary to fly here early. The rink is familiar to us. The locker rooms and the draw room are the same. Even the walls color didn’t change. We remembered how we felt last year so we didn’t have to get used to anything. Only that the transportation system seemed too confusing. We got to the village at one in the morning, went to sleep right away, and in the morning, we looked for a bus for a really long time, so we just called a cab. We planned two pre-Games practices, only one of them is at the main rink, at 7:50 in the morning on Saturday. Of course, we would’ve liked to train later, but we can’t choose.
Q: Does the early time affects the practice?
A: Naturally. You can wake your head up at eight in the morning, but your body is still sleeping. We have to build a warm-up differently so we could adjust better. It’s especially hard for Tania – she is used to getting up later. On the other hand, there should be nothing unexpected. At the last Games, Tania and Maxim weren’t contending for the high placement, so they could just skate and enjoy it. It’s different now, but their previous experience helps. They know how to behave and what to expect. It’s always hard to come and face the unknown
Q: Are you satisfied with the short program starting order?
A: Under the new system, your skating group doesn’t matter. I would’ve not been upset even if they drew first. It’s not bad now. The best group will start right after the resurfacing, so the ice should be good.
Q: What is your goal as a coach here?
A: To save my team from possibly being nervous. Sometimes we have to participate in some events, be at press-conferences, but I try to put the minimal mental pressure on my skaters. It’s such a thin line – we have to decline some requests for interviews and I know very well how easy it could upset somebody. I try to prevent that. Honestly, I’m more used to coaching but it looks like I’ll manage for now.
Q: Did your programs remained unchanged after winning the Europeans?
A: We worked on some elements a little and made them more difficult. Those changes are not noticeable for the untrained eye – it was mostly done for the judges so we could get extra points.
Q: Did you see how the contenders are skating?
A: I didn’t get to the Chinese practice in the morning. Maybe I’ll go to their evening practice. I want to understand how much in shape Shen and Zhao are. I saw the two other teams this season so I don’t expect something new from them. On the big scale, it doesn’t matter. We have to skate. I don’t think you should expect something unbelievable. Most important is not making mistakes.
Q: How did you settle in Torino?
A: We didn’t have time to look around much, but it seems my better than at SLC. It’s very comfortable now before the rest of the Russian skaters came – we don’t have to share common areas with anyone, we don’t have to get in line for the shower in the morning, nobody is making noises or bothers us when we rest. The rooms in the Olympic village are much larger than the last time.
