JOHNNY WEIR
Combining the skating skills of Brian Boitano and shopping savvy of Carson Kressley, Johnny Weir was certainly one of the most intriguing, and outspoken, personalities we caught up with this year.
I met Johnny after he worked out at The Pond in Newark and he seemed rather at ease considering his upcoming trip to Torino, Italy to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Was he worried about the competition he'd face? "No, I've competed before." Was he nervous about competing in the Olympics? "Some people dream of winning medals, but that's not what I'm really about." We didn't ask if Johnny was worried about Italy's public transportation, but we should have.
Johnny missed the bus to one of his performances and ultimately wound up in fifth place overall. Sure, he's an eccentric cat with a taste for outrageous costumes (did anyone catch the the Bjork-like swan get-up?), but we were never bored.
