If you're Xue Shen you go out and perform your best short program ever, and set a new world record in the process.
Shen and her partner and husband, Hongbo Zhao, took another step to elusive Olympic gold tonight, setting the pace with a 74.36-point performance that outstripped the field by 12.66 points.
"I'm young," joked Zhao, 36, in the mixed zone.
"We're so happy, but it is not enough. It is just a short program. We were a little tired, because of the time change."
If this is tired, the rest of the world's top pairs are in trouble.
The skaters, who married in 2007 and have skated together for 17 years, showed a peerless combination of athleticism and grace in their short to Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever." They hit their three big elements -- side-by-side triple toes, triple twist and throw triple loop -- right off the top, then showed off improved spins and an elegant lift.
Only their final move, an awkward back outside death spiral that gained just Level 2, was less than stellar.
"We started training [for competition] again in May, and it was very hard," Zhao said. "Everything hurts. My knees, back, shoulder. Only the competitions feel good."
Earlier this season, the veteran duo won Cup of China after a two-year hiatus from competition. Now, barring a catastrophe in the free skate, they're well on their way to the Grand Prix Final with two wins under their belts.
Asked why they decided to return after three world titles and two Olympic bronzes, neither hesitated.
"The Olympics," Zhao said. "That's our dream."
To compete again, or to win gold?
"We're back for gold," Shen said.

World silver medalists Dan Zhang and Hao Zhang had a disappointing outing. Dan Zhang doubled an intended triple Salchow, and the team lacked unison on their side-by-side spins. They sit fifth with 56.84 points. |
