You have been training in Canada since last December. Why did you change your coach from Nikolai Morozov to Brian Orser? Are you satisfied training in Canada?

Nikolai helped me a great deal. I learned a lot about figure skating as his student. He became very busy last season and I needed to find a coach that could give me more attention. I traveled to Toronto to work with David Wilson before Christmas last year and met Brian while I was there. I liked the style of his coaching and returned shortly after Christmas as his student. And yes, I am very satisfied. I love training in Toronto. It is a very positive environment and I feel it is bringing out the best in my skating. It is also a privilege to train on the same ice as Yuna Kim!

What kind of a coach is Brian Orser? Please compare with your previous coaches.

I have only had three coaches in my career and have been fortunate enough that they were all highly skilled and brought different experiences and expertise to my training. I like training with Brian because as a two time Olympic medalist and World Champion he understands the sport from a skater’s perspective and he also has the experience of coaching a skater to a World title.

You usually trained under Russian coaches, but now you train in Canada for the first time. How is the training environment in Toronto Cricket, Skating & Curling Club? How does it compare to the environment in Russia and the US? Is it different for you?

It is true that I have had Russian coaches for the first eight (8) years of my training, but I have never actually trained in Russia! Location has little to do with the success of a skater. Achievement in the sport is determined by the commitment of the skater, having good communication with their coach and being comfortable with the training environment. The main difference for me this year was having a choreographer different from my coach. In the past my former coaches did all of my choreography as well. It is very beneficial to get feedback and corrections from more than one person, but at the same time have the confidence that my coach is leading the team.

You've won twice ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships completing all goals for a junior skater, what is your goal in the seniors?

I feel honored to hold two World Junior Champion titles. This year I feel better prepared to compete in the senior ranks nationally as well as internationally. My main goal is to improve my skating every year.

Who is your favorite skater? Why so?

I would say that if I had to choose only one, it would be Michelle Kwan. I respect the longevity of her career and her ability to serve as a role model to so many on and off the ice as well as serve as an ambassador for my country.

This past March at the World Championships, both Ando Miki (who you've trained with together previously) and Yuna Kim (who you're training together with right now) were both competing. Who did you cheer for?

I adore them both! I wanted all of the skaters to skate their best! I have known Miki for over two years and I was so pleased that she made it to the podium this year. I was very happy that Yuna skated so well and won the World title. I knew it was Yuna’s dream (and goal) this season and I was so glad that she fulfilled it!

What kind of a skater is Yuna Kim? Do you help each other? You are almost the same age are you friends? What do you think are Yuna’s strengths and weaknesses?

Yuna is a complete skater. Her jumps have great height, her footwork and spins are amazing and she has incredible speed and flow on the ice. It is great to train with her. I can say that we push each other because we are both very competitive. We are good friends and have fun training together. She is a very kind person and very funny too. I would say that Yuna’s strengths are that she is committed, talented and fearless. As far as weaknesses, I have not seen any!

You have trained with many world class skaters in different countries from many different cultures; from a cultural point of view do the skaters differ in any way?

I have been so fortunate to have had the opportunity to skate with many different skaters from a variety of cultures. I was able to train in the United States, Japan, Italy, Andorra the Netherlands and presently in Canada. For skaters that are committed and dedicated to their training there is no difference. Ice is ice no matter where you are.

You have made three trips to Asia over the past few months for shows. Can you tell us about your experiences?

“Festa on Ice” this past April was an incredible experience especially how the Korean fans supported all of the skaters with such a high level of enthusiasm. I could feel their support as I skated and it made the show so much fun. The guys had a “Battle” number that was a lot of fun; I skated with Johnny, Patrick, Stephane and Jeremy. I was shocked how popular figure skating is in Korea. Yuna has made it a favorite sport. It was really a privilege to be included. In July, I was in Mao Asada’s show, “The Ice”. I have been to Japan many times and I will say that trip was my favorite visit to Japan. The cast was also incredible in Japan. I was able to see some old friends and meet some skaters that I never met before. In addition to my solo number I did two short group numbers, one with Denis Ten and Takahiko Mura and one with Takahiko Kozuka. We all had a great time. I returned to Korea in August for “Ice All Stars”. It was an amazing experience for me. I was honored to be invited to skate with such a cast of Champions. Brian and David did such a great job and made the work environment so much fun. I have never seen such a high level of support at a show before. It inspired me to want to give the audience my very best. Meeting and skating with Michelle Kwan was an added bonus!

You're gaining popularity with many dedicated fan sites in Japan, Russia and Korea. You must have received some gifts; what kinds? What was the most interesting?
你在日本、俄罗斯和韩国拥有了很多热心粉丝。你一定得到过不少礼物；什么样的？最有趣的是什么？
I was overwhelmed with the generosity of the fans at all of the shows and competitions last season. I received personal photos, candy, banners, clothes (I actually wore a purple jacket I received in Korea in FOI), personal items for my apartment, drawings, books, gifts for my mother and even gifts for my five (5) brothers and sisters at home. I am very grateful for the attention and effort the fans have extended to me. As far as most interesting, I did receive a very unique gift from some overseas fans before I left for Bulgaria for the World Junior Championships this year. They sent me a document with a map of a star they named after me. I would say that was very different and lucky! I cannot thank the fans enough for their support. Thank you!

You participated in Stars on Ice in the US this spring. What is the difference between the American figure skating culture and skating cultures from overseas? How about between American fans and Korean fans?
今年春天你参加了SOI的演出。美国滑冰文化与国外的有什么不同？美国粉丝与韩国粉丝呢？
It was a great experience to be in “Smuckers Stars on Ice” this past March. The cast was very friendly and welcomed me immediately. It was also great to skate for a local crowd. Many of my former teachers and friends were there as well as my entire family! In the states there is a long history of figure skating and it seems to be a much younger sport in Korea. While both countries are passionate about figure skating I must say the Korean fans are much LOUDER!
3月参加“Smuckers SOI”演出是一次很棒的经历。同事们很友好，马上就接纳了我。在家乡人面前演出感觉也很好。很多以前的老师、朋友，以及我的全家都来了！在美国花样滑冰有了很长的历史，在韩国还刚刚起步。两个国家对花样滑冰都很热衷，不过我得说韩国粉丝更狂热些！
You have been in two shows in Korea and trained this past summer with Stephane Lambiel. What can you offer about his skating?

Stephane is a great skater, amazing spinner and a very nice person. I like his skating very much because of his connection to the music. He is very passionate about every step and edge he makes on the ice. It was great to be able to train with him over the summer. I wish him the best success in the future.

I am training in Toronto with Brian Orser, my coach 5 days a week and have two new programs this season choreographed by David Wilson. My short is “Jonathon Livingston Seagull” and my long is to “Barber Violin Concerto”. I love my programs and am looking forward to presenting them in the fall.

All skaters at the senior ranks are very talented and no one should ever be underestimated. I don’t think of skating in that way. I just want to skate my best every time I am on the ice.
